Hi Berndt,

I also joined/subscribed recently, but didn't get a user name or password and couldn't understand why. I spent a long time trying to work out how to post a message; and then I noticed the email address below on one of the Baren Information pages and tried that. I sent my first message and got an email back which had some security device for a spam filter or something, but it did work.

I also don't seem to be able to post by pressing either of the "Reply to Baren/Member" texts either. I just get an unavailable page. If I try to reply via the website I'm asked for a username and password that I've never been given.

All I do is wait for the Digest to arrive, then just send an email to baren@ml.asahi-net.or.jp, as I've done with this message.

I don't know if I'm doing it right or not, but it seems to have worked so far. It's a bit of a different setup than other forums I've seen.

I suppose I'm joining Berndt in asking his question aswell.

Best wishes,

Mark.

I have been asked to correct some false accusations being spread by
the moderator of another list.

The SSNW exchanges are privately run by me. They have nothing to do
with Baren or its executive. There are quite a few members of Baren
who participate in the SSNW exchanges, as they do in many other
non-Baren exchanges. Unlike the Baren exchanges, the SSNW exchanges
are not restricted to relief printmaking.

I moderate a Yahoo forum with the name SSNW. In addition to hosting
exchanges, we have lively discussions on all forms of printmaking.
You do NOT have to be a member of the Yahoo SSNW list to participate
in our exchanges. But if you would like to join us, the site is:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ssnw/

There is a "sign up" button at the top of the page. If you are not
already a member of Yahoo, it will prompt you to open a membership.
If you are a member of Yahoo, it will prompt you for your username
and password.

I think you can also subscribe just by sending email to:

ssnw-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Because the moderator of another list has tried to be very
disruptive, I have had to change the list so that I approve everyone
who wants to join. So, just go through the process, I will be
notified, and I will approve you {;-}}}}

Cheers ..... Charles

Hi Mark and Berndt, here is an overdue welcome to the Baren
forum.......the list has been a bit quiet lately but that can change
quickly !

We are now closing in on Baren's birthday...nine years !!!!...with over
32,000 posts in our archives, dozens of world-wide exhibitions, 30+
quarterly exchanges, a very active BarenMall to supply printmakers with
quality supplies and with 300+ members spread across all
continents....Baren continues to be the premier place for online
printmaking discussion.

Happy Birthday Baren !!!!!

A birthday wish I have for Baren is for us members to become more vocal
and active on what we would like to see happening on Baren and what
visions they have for a Baren future.... anybody ?

Now on to Mark & Berndt's question:
Once you subscribe to the forum with your email id you will automatically
start receiving emails sent to the forum by other members. No username or
password is needed. If you signup to the regular list you will get
individual emails as they are sent by the members. If instead you signup
for the digest version you should be receiving a summary email once a day.
In order to 'chat' back all you have to do is reply to the Baren emails as
you receive them and all the registered users will get your response. Same
applies for the Baren-After-Five forum where discussion is not required to
be about printmaking. Please checkout the posting guidelines...
http://barenforum.org/information.html#Posting

Perhaps a bit confusing is a posting option under FAQ that does require a
username and password to post. This should only be used when you find
yourself away from your regular email program and want to post to Baren
from such places like a library, internet-cafe or when away in vacation...

thanks....Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois)

Hi folks,
Baren forum moderator here. Yes, if you are a subscriber to Baren,
then all you have to do to post is send a msg directly to
and if you are on the subscription list it
will go to the list. No passwords or tricks. You are making it too
hard on yourselves - it is easy. Now, why you can't post to
individuals is a mystery to me. But there are a billion different
computers/browsers/email programs out there & among all that I'm sure
there is an answer.

If anyone else is having a problem - contact me & I'll try to help you
figure it out!

I'm wondering if Berndt and Mark are talking about posting to the
Baren Blog when they say "chat". I've had trouble posting there,
and still don't know how, believe it or not. In fact, I'm finding it
difficult to post comments on any blogs without first signing up to
have a blog, myself, there.
Many's the time I've wanted to say something to one of the artists,
but you can only move around within their blog program (after signing
up). I can see this would keep bloggers from being spammed and
that's reason enough, but it's kind of a pain to have to sign up to
have a blog yourself, when you don't really want one.

OK, posting to the Baren blog is different than posting to the forum
discussion. While anyone can read and post a 'comment' to any of the blog
entries...you do need a username and password to send new entries to the
blog. The blog is setup to handle multi authors...so anyone that's a Baren
member can post new entries to the blog...you will need to request your
very own username & password....just send the blog manager an email via
the link on the main blog page and I
will.....oops....I mean he will reply asap.

The Baren blog has been very quiet since the Vancouver Summit in
August....it's time to get some new print images up and update us with
what's going on
with your printmaking...feel free to use it to share any printmaking
related information....upcoming exhibits, work-in-progress, etc....

thanks...Julio Rodriguez

Julio,
This is indeed a good question...I cannot believe that we have been around that long, I was shocked. I joined the list right after the first exchange had been filled...seems like only last year...hummmm. As the treasurer for the Baren Forum group and the mall manager, I have all the money! And we do have a bit now. After all these years we have about $6000 in the bank from our 5% of mall sales and a few donations. Running the website and hosting it is about $600 a year. Lets hear some discussion about what we can do to encourage woodblock printmaking...

I think we are soon to actually have our non-profit status. It has taken me three+ years of working with the IRS, you don't really even want to know the story, but I think it is almost here. I am waiting for the letter, which I hope will arrive soon.

As a group we have a wonderful opportunity to further printmaking...but we need lots of ideas. Several years ago we gave small monetary prizes to young printmakers and we could do so again. I think they were chosed by list members that taught in colleges and wanted to inspire students.

But with this creative group, I know we can think of other things....maybe a world exhibit or???
Best to all,
Barbara
