Sue, that was such a sweet email, and your doggie was such an inspiration
that I think she made the print for me.

Maria, I don't know if these fake cards you mentioned work for the following
application, but I can tell you New Yorkers that your old Metro cards are
still good for something after they run out.

They can be folded in half and used for handling paper while printing (I
have not used these for hanga, but do for solarplate etching etc) so that your
fingerprints don't get on the paper. just put one folded card in each hand
and you use them kind of like clips to grab the paper. Being a rather messy
inky person, this has been a very helpful tip :)

happy printing!

I use the cards for painting straight lines of equal lengths. I cut them
the size I need and dip the edge in paint and print the edge on the
painting. They are supposed to be good to unlock doors too but I haven't
tried it. Bea

Maria, you mentioned about your knuckles hurting with the Murasaki
baren. I was told once in a class that we aren't to use the knuckles
but the heel of the hand for pressure. I finally remembered to do
that, and it works very well.

Ball bearing baren (from Baren Mall, the rough one) seems to give the most
"bang for the buck"

Before taking print classes at UNI I used to do greeting cards every December or January. I used a baren made by Speedball which is a nylon covered short cylinder with a handle. Recently I ordered a ball bearing baren. My grand children were here for a visit and we made prints by drawing on foam core and printing it. I was amazed that with this particular medium the Speedball worked as well if not better than the ball bearing baren. I do most of my printing on a press so hadn’t used the two before side by side.

I also use credit cards for picking out bits of wood etc from the rolled out ink and the inked baren. They work for applying ink to an intaglio plate as well.

Dear Baren friends,

In response to the question about painful knuckles: The correct way
is make sure you're applying pressure in the center of the baren, in
order to take advantage of the full diameter of the baren. In order
to do that, the pinky, ring, and middle fingers are most important to
push in the central area of the baren. If you use the heel it feels
easier to apply pressure, but you're only using part of the baren.
So eventually you'll wear out only that area and might create baren
suji. Believe me, I have sympathy for your painful experience-- when
I started as an apprentice I had many bleeding blisters. But after
you pass that stage, you'll get calluses and then you've made it.
Bandages and things will help a little bit... also make sure the
handhold is very tight, for if it's loose there will be more rubbing
against your knuckles.

Good luck,
Keiji

Thanx Keiji,

I have a sore tendon running from my thumb half-way up my arm. I assumed I
did it while at the Summit, either with the baren or the new long-handled
v-cut tool I bought (I suspect the latter). Still bothering me, but I'm
soldering thru. ;-]

Blisters, eh? No thank you! I'll go back to my press before that happens!

Ellen
