Clive,
Wnat an interesting idea! The Baren Alphabet....can we add some exclamation points to get 30? If we don't do this at this time, I hope we can do it some time.
Best to all,
Barbara

I did not mean to suggest it is a dog ... on the contrary, it is not a bad
little press ... and especially for the money. I am sure you will put it to
good use.

This does sound like fun. I'm in favor of it for sometime if not this time.

I agree, this sounds like a really neat theme.

The alphabet theme sounds interesting...... just a thought, instead of a square paper why not do a long thin print (5 1/2" x 15") that is designed to be a page in an ABC book?

I also like the alphabet theme. And if we're doing the
alphabet the bigger, longer format sound interesting to me!

Are you thinking of the page being horizontal, Barbara, with the
short edge being the 'bound' edge?

We did an alphabet project in the WEN group, and used letters
from beautiful old wood fonts at the Hamilton Type Museum as
part of the designs.

Will be happy to accept a non-smoking, cat and dog friendly single or
couple for hospitality exchange homestay for the Vancouver/Portland
workshop. I am in inner SE Portland, close to freeways, in an
interesting pedestrian area with lots of good cafes, wine bars, book
stores, etc. You might need to rent a car to get up to the workshop.
However, it isn't beyond possibility that someone else staying in
Portland would trade a contribution to gas money for a daily ride to
the site. Please contact me at snowgum AT mac DOT com.

(In case anyone isn't familiar with the term, a hospitality exchange
means you trade a stay in my spare room for promise of possible future
stay in your spare room.)

Baren exchange #30 is open for sign-up (I write somewhat groggily and still
quite jet-lagged). I've reviewed all your postings about size and have
compromised with a square 8x8 inch sheet size and a maximum 4x4 inch square
image size. Hope you have fun with it! Sign-up page is active at:
http://barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_sign-up.html -- please don't panic
if you don't see your name appear immediately - I still do this manually and
I'm sorta s-l-o-w this week.

Mike

Hi Maria,

Did you mention that the original puzzle print would be at the summit 2006,
and we could print our own?

What do you need for this project? Ink, paper, money? I would like to do
this and just wanted to know what I should supply.

Hi Sue,

Actually, a bit of a misunderstanding. I mentioned that 'a' puzzle print
that I used when I did my HGTV demo would be available. This would be the
blocks that made this simplistic print:
http://www.1000woodcuts.com/fullsize/bluemoon.html
Certainly if anyone wants to pull their own prints off the blue moon blocks
it would be up to them to bring paper, ink, baren, muscle and desire.

The original Baren Puzzle project block is now all glued together and rather
large. Really would be kind of a pain to bring. I guess it wasn't "meant" to
be printed once the initial run was pulled and I personally would rather
keep it that way. But it is also a community project and I don't really
consider it "mine", so if there were to be a consensus of all (or most) the
participants to have more prints pulled...well, I don't know, what does
everyone think?

One helpful tip, or more just something to think about, when printing
two (or more) types of print processes on one surface is how much the
paper stretches for different processes. For example, I put hours and
hours into making a silkscreen stencil to be printed over an etching.
I traced over a print (being smart enough to account for paper
stretch, and it printed well, but there was too much paper texture. I
decided to switch paper, but forgot that that would necessitate an
entire new stencil...

Another thing to think about is archivalness. When printing
water-based over oil based, it is prone to eventually chip off or
something like that. I'm not sure how "perminant" printing water-based
(especially silkscreen since it is in the plastic family) first is,
but you can only do that if you don't soak the paper. Hope this helps!

The rule supposedly is "fat over lean is fine, but lean over fat isn't."

That means, you can put oils over acrylics (or other water-based
paints), but not acrylics over oils.
