OCTOBER 20, 21, 22, 2006: Breaking the Habit
( http://www.culturechurn.com/breakingthehabit.htm )
They are extending the deadline for submissions...wondering who else is out there.
Last years show was great....resulting in a grant.
It consisted of 33 artists from a variety of states...
showing the arting they do just for themselves.
Arting that HAS to get out...that has all the delicacy, intricacy, punch and power that fuels the creative beast itself...the stuff that results because of the creative process...
the artists footprints.

I'm not really represented by any gallery...because I can't stick to just one medium/one theme...
I'm driven by what happens to and around me....
and my curiosity prevents me from doing the same kind of arting month after month, year after year..............
but, I've got this energy...and the arting keeps happening with it's natural waves.
I know there are more like me out there, that have really strong work,
arting that smacks 100% who they are and done because the artist needs to see it,
done for no one but themselves...no compromises......arting work that gets in your head and stays there.....and that is hard to find in galleries....
those are the ones they are trying to find...
so, they are extending the deadline..
which should be reflected on their site today.
Linda

Maria
Thank you for the update on the great Cairn project. I have not sent any
money for your project yet. I am thinking the easiest way might be to
enclose it with the return of the puzzle piece.
Now for subject. I was not thinking on doing a pile of rocks at all for my
piece. Camping out on a beautiful, isolated beach in Baja changed that for
me. I had brought along sketching and painting stuff, always a must. I sat
down to do a sketch and looked around and there were several piles of rocks.
Being both a desert climate and a coastal climate the Baja is very unique.
There right on the beach were those rocks and growing out of the side of one
of them, was, of all things, a cactus! It was a most amazing thing to see.
The sketch turned out well. How much of that I use or what I finally end up
with is not yet decided. However, since I seem to be the only Baren member
to spend about half the year in ths unique spot it would seem very fitting
to use something from there as my mark.
I do like the broad attitude that we should carve something about who we are
in this big ol world of diverse artists. Who I am has a great deal to do
with where I live.
On the other hand, Baren has been very influential in my art. Soemthing
about carving itself would make a good subject. Anyone else have ideas??

Another place to check for workshops is the American Print Alliance. I
think their web address is http://www.printalliance.org. And there is
always the BAREN SUMMIT. Now, here is the bargain of the year: a one
week workshop for $75.00. Many of the meals are included, free housing
can be provided, transportation around the area can be had for the
asking. The cost to you: plane fare to and from Portland, OR. Check
it out on the Barenforum.org home page! Let me know if you're
interested. Oh! Did I mention the dates - Aug. 14 - 19. Made to order
for school teachers. You will learn everything and more about block
printing - we all teach one another our favorite tricks - There is
still room for one or two more, but space is going f-a-s-t, so make
your reservations NOW!!!!! Everything is a positive about this
occasion, (with the possible exception of the necessity for porta
pottys). But - we're a tough crew we can live with that :-)

There is some confusion about the location: it will be at my studio in
Vancouver, WA, but you fly into Portland, OR (PDX). These two garden
spots of the universe are separated by the Columbia River only - from
the air they look like all one place.

Cheers!

Sorry about the two messages in one minute, but I forgot to address the
mixed print media. I have mixed them all, so what would you like to
know? I've even managed to print hanga over ink-jet without it running
too much - LOL. There is nothing that can't be done, as far as I know.
If you have a specific question about combining media, let me know.

Cheers!

The square format that was mentioned got a few brain cells firing again
and remembered that some time ago I did an alphabet in a square format.
It wouldn't need to be square but 26 Baroners doing a letter each
would make an interesting exchange.

Isn't the exchange sign up open now? It is the eve of the 5th... hmm.

Yes, I like the square idea.
