Thanks so much, Barbara! That helps a lot. It's so refreshing to
see artists who aren't afraid to talk about pricing their work. I
like the idea of starting out a bit low, then raising them later on.
I've had way too much criticism from other artists (from painters,
mostly) who told me I was "devaluing" their art by pricing mine too
low. Since I don't do the gallery thing right now, that makes a
difference, too.
And it's nice to hear that some of you are selling on Ebay....I've
always liked Ebay because it gets me in contact with the end users of
my art....And I've sold things off Ebay because people saw me there,
too. Like it or not, there's something about Ebay that makes it seem
"safe" for art buyers--maybe because of the feedback system. Some
will buy there that might not buy directly from an artist's website.
(Same with Etsy, I'd imagine.)

Thanks so much, Barbara! That helps a lot. It's so refreshing to
see artists who aren't afraid to talk about pricing their work. I
like the idea of starting out a bit low, then raising them later on.

Did somebody mention Baumann? I love his work. I think seeing his
work years ago was what got me interested in woodcuts. I was able to
finally see some of it in person on our last visit to Taos, NM.
I'll definitely have to look up the Allport work.

We just discussed this about a month ago and I don't want to bore people on
the list. You might want to search the archives for recent posts on pricing.
Here is my current price list for unframed/unmatted works:

My art fair prices are the same. My eBay prices are usually lower, to match
the market that shops eBay, but I only sell "retired" prints or older works
not available in festivals. You don't want to cheat your faithful art fair
goers. I quit selling the cheap stuff at art festivals because my medium and
high-end stuff started going quite well. Only so much room in a 10x10'
booth.
Since I started making a living as an artist exclusively about 6 years ago,
my prices have probably tripled. I don't listen to painters or anyone else
in the "field". Most artists tend to take the overprice-and-whine route; I
have chosen the price-right-and-rejoice route. It's ink on paper, that's
all. I can make more.
By all means check out prices on eBay for woodcuts by self-representing
artists and on Etsy. Check the websites of other printmakers on this list.
Then email them and make sure they are selling consistently at those prices.
Start there with your prices. Price by size (sigh) because the general
public buys by size. Be comfortable with what you get and, most of all, sell
your art...a lot.
May you run out of inventory!
