Received a card from a friend visiting Tasmania with an amazing lino
cut by Curzona Frances Louise Allport (1860-1949). There are some
wonderful prints of hers that can be viewed by scrolling through the
collection under her name at the Heritage Services and Collections
section under the State Library of Tasmania website.

Could Exchange #30 be a themed exchange instead of no theme? Is it fixed in
stone? Seems timing might be good for a politically-related subject, and
need not be limited to U.S. politics. Some advantages to having such a
theme: might bring more folks into this group; work would have a
historical and philosophical edge to it; diversity within the group; a
visual forum for cultural and perhaps controversial ideas. It is possible
that by trying to appease everyone it would more likely push others away who
might be less inclined to sign on to more conventionally themed exchanges.

Hi all,

First of all, I want to thank everybody that's answered my questions
about marble rolling pins and inks over the last few weeks. I'm
having lots of problems with my hands (carpal tunnel AND smashed a
finger in a drawer), so I'm trying to cut down on the number of
e-mails....hard to do sometimes!

My question du jour is about pricing. I can hear people groaning
now! Is there some kind of formula or rule of thumb that you use for
pricing small prints? I'm having conflicts because I also sell my
drawings and original paintings from my website....I don't want the
prints to be more than the paintings, but I feel they should be more
than the drawings. Or maybe not??

Any help on the pricing issue would be greatly appreciated!

Ray,
These were lovely, I was especially interested in the one that had the painting and print next to each other. When you see someones body of life work you can see there control developing. thanks for sharing this with us. Some of the prints reminded me of Baumann, but that might have just been the sugject matter.

Bobbi,
Since there is only one drawing they usually sell for more than prints...since prints are multiples they sell for slightly less....until you are famous, that is.
When I started showing my work I took the price I was willing to sell the smallest work for framed and doubled it as if it were going to a gallery and then I went up in increments from there. There is no set rule. I think you can ask whatever people will pay. It is always easier to raise prices than to lower them so start out low and if they sell well, gradually raise them. Maria Arango sold some of her small works for $10 at art fairs when she started out, I think she has raised that price, but she still has an assortment of small inexpensive works on ebay. It can be bread and butter money and a steady income, allowing you to take a bit more time with larger works and ask quite a bit more for them.
Sorry this was not a real answer, like $.20 a square inch or so...I know some artists figure it like this. I sold my small works, about 3x3 inches framed 6x6 for $65 two years ago. And I sold a lot of them at my gallery in Portland where I pay no commission but do pay a monthly fee. So maybe this year I will make them $75
Best to all,
Barbara
