Oh Harry! VERY COOL cairn/memorial rock thing!
I am not at a loss for designs, but I'm thinking along the lines of an
interesting "self-challenge"...perhaps I will just cut my blocks into shapes
resembling smallish stones, models for such we do not lack here in the
rugged desert. Then, as participants send their blocks back, the challenge
will lie in assembling the stones into a "pile" as they come. That is, I
would not make the pile first, then cut, I would simply "stack" the blocks
as they came, much in the way a real cairn is built. I'm liking the idea
more and more!

On the Great Baren Summit, please come no matter what your degree of
difficulty may be. I'm not a hanga person but plan on paying close attention
to any hanga lessons being given despite my humidity handicap out here in
Vegas.
I'm also planning to bring a few items to add variety and fun
experimentation to the already stacked activity list. Of course I will bring
the actual real HGTV puzzle block that I prepared for the filming to aid in
my demo and everyone will be welcomed to pull prints from the thing. I am
also planning on bringing some rotary tools and bits and a few pieces of
hardwood for folks to play around with. And last but not least, in honor of
Charles and Barbara, I will bring a carved stone from my collection and some
acrylics and other stone-print pulling paraphenalia. Should be a load of
fun!

I better write all this down...

Carol, interesting that you would mention the resist used in watercolors. I
saw a bottle of that at the new store as well and considered using it. I
think it might work well with hanga printing as it is also water based.
When I get to the printing I will let you know how it is working. I have to
first choose my wood and put on my design, a landscape. This will be a fun
new project!!! I finished my nude for the exchange today. Now if I get
word my paper is waiting up north I will relax and know that July it will be
getting printed in time for the deadline!

If I had to fly off to another continent I would not miss the next summit,
even if I drained out every cent in my little account to come. So, yes Brad
do go sign up!!!

Leigh,
Go with Masa for this type of ink and printing. Be sure to print on the smooth side unless you really want to work hard. The rough side will take the ink but wears your arm out. I used the rough side for effect and was sure tired by the end of the edition.
The hosho from Dan Smith will probably not be sized so I would not use it. Rives lightweight will work, but not as well as masa.

Brad and all....
The sign up sheet on the baren summit signup page shows a limit of 25....neither Sharri or I can figure out where that came from....we are planning on 40-50 people so ignore the limit and sign up! We will see if we can get the page changed soon.

Yes, Leigh raises a question that triggers mine.
I'm finding I'm consistantly needing 10-15 prints before the printing starts to look good.
I've been using newsprint...paper bags...whatever I can lay my hand on and save...
needing something good enough that I can use it to double check my registration for cutting kentos...
and for fine tuning the freshly cut blocks...
what are you people out there using for those first prints made to get the color up and running?
If it had/has a name...would I be calling this proofing paper?
Maybe what I'm doing...using what's around... is just normal...
I've been so consumed with trying to get a handle on so much with this...
I never really paid much attention to what paper used for these 10-15 could be...
but, today, I decided to ask..
