Charles,
I am back on the web. Had to change the email account.
Hope everyone enjoyed the last little exchange.
One of my students is working with woodblock in a way I had never seen:
Using wax as a resist along with carving...Nice effect.
She had done some eggs for Easter and used the wax on a block, brushed
pigment on and printed. Very cool.
Has anyone tried this?

Hello Robert,

I have not heard of the "wax as resist on woodblock", but it does sound
interesting. From your description, I presume she was using water based
inks. What kind of wax was she using, and how was it applied? Are there any
images available for viewing?

I hadn't heard of a 'wax resist' in woodcut either, Robert -- I've used
shellac to good effect, but wax should work even more dramatically, as it
would tend to more completely resist water-borne pigments -- what a great
idea! I bet a very interesting reduction print might be produced without
carving, using only wax to resist the pigment -- I'll have to give this a
try! Cool idea! Thanks!

wonder what effect oil based inks would have if put on a block before it was
inked in the Japanese manner. maybe offset another image or painted on
parts of a block.

I believe Ellen Shipley's Year of the Dog print was done in much this way
... one color in oil, another in waterbased ... It worked quite well.

Thanx John,

But that's not quite right. Both inks were oil based -- one had miracle gel added to it to alter its viscosity.

another printmaker from the same neck of the woods, Leslie Evans, who
does great woodcuts as well as wonderful linocuts which she then hand
