Here's another opinion on the printing/smudging problem. I suspect it
is pressure more than anything else. I prefer damp paper - just damp
enough to feel cool. I like to let it set overnight if at all possible
- that way the water distribution is even. I use one blanket - the
pusher over something rigid such as plexi, masonite, plywood, or even
heavy cardboard (not corregated). Back in the dark ages that was how I
was taught to do it, the rationale being that the pusher protected the
roller. If some little hard thing was on the tympan the blanket would
prevent it from scratching or harming the roller. I haven't had any
problem with smudging, or blurry images. (This is using oil pigments
on wood and a paper similar in wt. to BFK.)
And now for hanga and a press. I did some pretty good sized images
last year and printed some of them on the press using the method
described above (pusher and tympan) and didn't have any problems. They
weren't anywhere near as large as Mike's, but bigger than most of what
we usually think of as "traditional". Anyway, it worked just fine!
For that little stunt I used a Japanese paper from McClain's. It was
the closest place that I could find good paper that was large enough
and Alex was a great help!
Cheers!
