I belong to Xylon Quebec, whose members are primarily French
speaking--Xylon is an international woodblock association. And I had an
interesting question about terminology from one of its members:

"I would like to know if there is an other word or expression in
english for wood, lino, plastic. . .instead of relief printing"

I can't think of any myself but maybe there is. Any thoughts?

Yesterday I pulled the first impressions from a large block (4x8
feet) onto 42x77 inch papers and everything worked GREAT!

Well, you could use xylography, which refers to block printing, as
opposed to using type. Or, what the heck, you could use block printing!

The xyl- prefix refers to wood but I think that it's a matter of using
what you have available to you (and to add to the confusion, the OED
defines this as "wood-engraving," without distinguishing between wood
engraving and woodcuts, as printmakers and other specialists usually
do). I think that folks like "relief printing" because it clarifies
what sort of process is being used without referring to the substrate at
all.

Any other ideas out there?

Might be just a teeny bit premature (I've pulled exactly FIVE
impressions from my new setup) but ABSOLUTELY let's talk about
it! How about MOMA? Anybody got an 'in' there? :) It'd be a
rewarding challenge, I'm sure, and the exhibition would need to
'travel' don't you think? New York, Tokyo, Paris, London, Los
Angeles... Thanks so much for thinking of me, Dave!

Do I send the archive copy to Mike Lyon?
Who do I send the sorting files too?

One suggestion pre stamped & addressed return padded env. or flat boxes
make the job much easier. any additional postal forms should be filled out and
attached to return env. According to the post office without expertise cert.
all you can insure art work is for the value of the paper so if you did not
go to an art dealer and get a opinion as to value before hand it is not worth
insuring it as they will not pay. The funny thing is the return postage
never matched the postage coming to me. Don't worry about it as I did not
volunteer to do this to make any money.

Dear John,

If you can scan the prints and email them to me (see scanning and
emailing instructions about 3/4 of the way down the page at
http://barenforum.org/exchange/for_coordinators.html ) then you can
send the archive set directly to the Spencer (the address is a bit
higher on the same page) -- otherwise, send the archive set to me at
1227 W 63rd Terr -- Kansas City MO 64113 and I'll take care of
scanning 'em and getting 'em to Steve Goddard at the Spencer...

The Dave and Mike show! Sounds great...I would love to see it. New York is
so full of variety I am sure there is a place for it, but I am afraid I
don't know where it is ! Manhattan has gotten so overpriced that the
galleries tend to shy away from prints and works on paper because they can't
make enough money to pay their exorbitant rents.

Japan Society? Ukiyo-e Society? Bob Blackburn's? Columbia's LeRoy Neiman
Center?

There will be a great print show sponsored by the Philadelphia Print
Collaborative at 55 Mercer, the reception is Tuesday, January 31. It is a
respected artist's cooperative gallery, where artists share the cost of the
space. That is one way alternative spaces run.

I have given up on trying to describe what it is I do - when I tell people I
use a synthetic rubber plate that is similar to eraser material (SafetyKut
from Daniel Smith) they go, "oh, rubber stamping"! It is easier to just say
linocuts. Most folks remember making a linoleum print from grade school art
class...

hi annie,
the term for this is "soft block printing", but if you don't feel like
explaining that to those outside of printmaking, you could just refer to
it as relief block printmaking? at any rate, the good thing is that any
term pretty much opens up the doors to educate people about printmaking
in general :)
