i just got good news that i wanted to share with you all. i had three of my prints published in the winter 2005 edition of ZYZZYVA which is a journal of west coast writers and artists. the three they printed are a series i did entitled "righteous women #1 (mother jones), #2 (audre lorde), #3 (emma goldman).
for those of you who haven't heard of zyzzyva, it has been around for over 20 years and is rather well known among up and coming writers and artists, so i am really proud to be among those selected to be published.
even though it is a west coast publication you can find it in most larger bookstores nationwide, if you are interested in seeing my prints... they are on pages 52-54. their web site is www.zyzzyva.org, but last i checked they still had their fall edition up.
anyway just wanted to share my good news with you all!
best, brad

hey there-
i was just addressing my envelopes (i decided against sending them as postcards because of my worries they would be damaged) and noticed that there are no zip codes for either Charles Morgan (in canada) or Sharri LaPierre (in WA), and alas neither of them have web site links on baren...
are either of you reading this and can let me know, or does someone else know them? i know i'm kinda jumping the gun on new years, but i got them printed yesterday (70 of them, my back was so sore last night after 8 hours in the studio!) and am excited to get them in the mail!!
best, brad
That's wonderful news!!! Congratulations, Brad. I've bookmarked their site so I can check out your work!

I was 14 when I stopped doing art. Long story.
But I played at art off and on for 30 years. I was directing "Ahmal and the Night Visitors" in Germany and on the opening night I was a nut case. There was a piece of straight-grain wood, 12x12, in the workshop and I picked up a screwdriver and started gouging out a simple head with hands. After about 15 minutes I forgot about the opera and began to look for paper. I found some thick off white cotton sheets that were about 30x 16.
No ink....I took bronze spraypaint and coated the block and pressed the paper to the block, rubbed it with my hand and pulled it. Wow!
I then mixed brown and silver spraypaint and printed the block with a piece of plastic, moved it over and reprinted it. It was sooo cool!
The opera was half done and I was barely aware of it.
I made 12 prints and ended up having 6 framed.
My niece still has the one I sent her 30 years later.
I sold 4 at the frame shop in Worms Germany and kept one.
I was 1989 before did another on, while working on a degree in printmaking at the U of O.

[Baren] Daily DigestPlease allow me to add two things to my memories of Baren history. One that while web surfing for printmakers, I had come across a wonderful printmaker called Gillian Gatto who worked in Maine and then she just dropped out of sight on the web and I searched and searched for her. So you can imagine how pleased I was when Gillian joined Baren. Also, Maria has been a great inspiration to me, not only her beautiful woodcuts which so completely capture the feeling of traveling through Nevada, over mountain range after mountain range, but also her wonderful writing which expresses the American vernacular in print. It makes me wonder when your first book of short stories is coming out, Maria!

Any chance of seeing that initial print? Perhaps on the Baren blog?
