Gayle, you lovable vampirette, thank you for sending Dale's message on
to us Digest Folk. I have a bone spur on a vertebrae which has rubbed
against something else and created a little cyst in the spinal cord
which in turn presses on a major nerve. It had a gillion choices of
little bitty relatively unimportant nerves it could press upon, but no!
It had to have a big important nerve that runs down the back of my
right leg and into the foot all the way to the toes. Graham's Hori Dai
has been my saviour, and I worship it daily. (Well, almost - anyway.)
I cannot recommend it highly enough, because it eliminates bending over
your work. I always wear my little magnifying visor, too, so the
working outfit is a real winning design of haute coutoure. (Eat your
heart out, Coco Chanel - she is so envious that SHE didn't come up with
this look.) And, last but not least, exercise is essential. Not only
will your back not hurt as much, but your tummy will be flatter. Two
for the price of one - who can beat that??

And, btw, my mythical beast has been printed in a trial phase. I think
it needs two more blocks and then will be ready for the Exchange.
Because I wanted to get it in a Christmas show this is the first print
I have ever done which will officially have two states. The first
state has a very small edition of 5. Now I am anxious to get back to
carving and it is time to concentrate of Christmas. Wouldn't cha know.

Hello. I joined this group a little while ago and have been watching
it ever since. I feel that now is a good time to introduce myself.

I am a woodblock printmaker, but since I am not all that interested in
Moku Hanga (I am far too attached to my brayer and oil based ink for
that), I don't know how well I fit in around here. Still, I love
woodblock printing and want to make contact with other printmakers
despite differences in technique.

My work is mainly abstractly carved blocks that are layered together.
I don't really plan how they will work together or do any sketching, I
just figure it out while I am working. These prints are one of a kind
but printed as part of a similar series. I do editioned portraits
sometimes but overall I don't have the patience for editioning.

Welcome Marissa! I don't foresee Moku Hanga in my near future either. I
use water based inks...brayer, linoleum blocks etc. Some day I'll try wood
too.

And by the way, your work is wonderful. I have a really bad habit of
loving everyone's work! I really mean it when I tell someone that though!
So far
Reeds (framed by red squares) is my favorite. But, I'll be going back
often to check out the rest!

Marissa,
Welcome to the Baren Forum...not everyone does moku hanga, and some of us just do enough to do the all hanga exchanges. Many are oily people, myself among them but I have learned to do the waterbased and I tell you, I have a healthy respect for blended colors in waterbased prints.
I really enjoyed your work, it seemed like a visual tour of the development of this body of work. Very nice.

Dear Marissa,

Hey! Welcome to Baren... Too bad you're not interested in
moku-hanga -- your abstract images are a shoe-in for the technique, I
think! They seem kin to Helen Frankenthaler's and Paul Furneaux's
moku-hanga (to me, at least) -- beautiful work, really -- I first saw
it a few days ago when Google alerted me to a thread on something
called
WetCanvas!
in which my print-work was 'discussed' by you and others --
entertaining conversation, and I peeked in to see what you folks were
making yourselves -- was interested by your work. SO WEIRD to see
you now on Baren -- it amazes me how connected to one another we all seem!

Maybe someday you'll experiment a bit with moku-hanga -- I think
you'll love one quality in particular -- the ability to over-print
10, 20, 30 (and many more) times with none of the problems we have
with oil-borne pigments beyond four or so layers...

As far as 'fitting in' goes, I think the MOST printers on Baren are
primarily using Western (oily) techniques, so you're in good company here!

Friends and fellow printmakers,
I have a friend looking for a small etching press, maybe 22" wide (this seems an odd size to me, so lets say 24" wide) She want to do only monotypes on it so if anyone has one they want to part with, let me know. We are in Portland, OR, but if it is this small shipping should not be too big a problem.

Have your friend check out Thomas presses:

I know a number of artists who have these presses, and they are quite good.
Also quite light. Also priced in Canadian dollars. Also made here on
Vancouver Island, so it would be an easy overnight to come pick it up.
Probably be as cheap or cheaper than a used press.

Just a thought ...
