Rob, I am a retired orthopedic surgeon and can tell you that back pain is a
very difficult problem to treat. I have found through the years that if a
person does abdominal strengthening exercises, ie situps or crunches it does
help. I personally carve standing up on a rather tall bench. It helps to wear
good shoes and a mat if using that approach. Good luck, and don't quit carving!

Rob,
You mentioned your back giving you spasms. The greatest solution for
this problem is the Hori-dai carving bench. You can make one easily
following the directions Graham Scholes has on this page:
http://www.woodblock.info/bootcamp/hori-dai.html
It really should be called the Save Your Back bench. I can work all
day and the only thing that gives me trouble is my carving hand. Now
if someone would come up with a cure for arthritis I would have no
problems!
Cheers!

This was an amazing tip! Thank you so much. I am going to build one this weekend!
To all! Thanks for your participation! The website is flying! I just added a call for entries (slow starter) and search by location! I am hoping more printmakers will get together and share their works and ideas when they see they are in the same area. see you around!

YES, I strongly (is there such a word?) suggest Graham's Hori-Dai . I have been using mine for the past 3 years.
Still cannot thank Graham enough, it is wonderful.
I have Spinal Stenosis and it is a real back saver!!!
By all means, make yourself one.

Yes...good idea to keep our backs in good shape at all cost....I often
wondered how all those old time Japanese artists that lived so long
managed to put out work into their 80's & 90's....(of course many of them
did just the art work design but none of the actual carving or printing.....
Anyways...here is wishing a very very well deserved Happy Birthday to
BAREN and Barenforum.org on celebrating our eight year online..... seven
years of uninterrupted service to the worldwide printmaking community,
29,300+ postings, 27+ print exchanges (and other assorted ones), dozens of
exhibits worldwide and over 300+ members and growing.
thanks....Julio Rodriguez
Happy birthday, Baren... Feliz cumpleaņos... That is quite something!!!

If you are thinking of signing up for the Southern Summer Northern Winter
Solstice Mini-Print Exchange, you need to send me (by private email:
cmorgan@uvic.ca) your snail mail address. Tomorrow, November 30, is the
deadline. We now have about 50 participants.
Bea Gold ... you only sent me part of your address. I have found the rest
on the Rooster exchange list. I am a little worried because you have not
responded to my email. If you do NOT wish to participate in SSNW05, please
let me know right away.
Cheers ...... Charles
