For what it's worth, you can fight City Hall (and as Sharri points out -
win). The politician in me would tell you that you have to avoid emotion
as much as possible, and overwhelm them with facts. Don't accept their
numbers or positions at face value, but where possible try to use their
numbers to counter their argument - it can be done. If they really are
committed to doing it, they'll wear you down. I was able to successfully
fight a TIF (Tax Increment Financing) District twice by showing the
village involved what the economic impact on the schools would be.
Sadly, they ran the TIF proposal a third time, and we lost, or more
accurately the kids lost.

to Barbara,
I love your zebras. I made a simple single color linocut of a zebra. It is titled "vintage Television"
If any interest you may view it here
http://www.robertviana.com/zebra.htm
Do you do just wood reduction prints? when you use wood or do you ever do multi-block?
I am interested in your solarplates as well. I have been doing etchings foe ever and I have not tried them yet. I still use intaglio techniques. Here is my latest, just finished!

Cheers to all of you fellow Bareners!

Hocus Pocus and jolly Halloween Treats !

I got my exchange #25 package in the mail too.......another wonderful set
of prints and a great job by Diane Cutter coordinating and creating a very
elegant print colophon........

I have not had a chance to dwell on each 'Dream & Visions" print and the
meaning behind the work....while some of the images are subtle others are
very graphical representation that leave nothing to the imagination.
Looking forward to a quiet evening enjoying this set of prints.

thanks Diane, Mike and all the participating Bareners for another
completed exchange...

Thanks Mindy, but they look a little better on the internet than they do in person...you cannot see any flaws at 4 feet...up close it is a different story! Not quite as smooh as they appear!

Robert, I am doing a step by step solarplate thing on my blog soon as I just had a photographer take pictures of the whole process. I did it for Inksmith at Dan Smith as they asked me to write about it and send photos...I have no idea if they are using it or not. We will see what happens.

Hi Rob,

I love New England Winter. Great etching. So soft looking -- you got a lot
of tonal quality. Did you aquatint, and what did you use if you did?

Barbara, great zebra! Yesterday was like Christmas in October, the postal goblins brought me the finest mail in weeks and weeks. Not only did I get my memory to upgrade this machine, but I also got the wonderful Dreams and Visions prints. WOW! One would have thought such a topic would give rise to dreamy landscapes, not at all. The individual interpretations of this topic were amazing. The depth of thought, talent and just plain brilliant work goes beyond the expected. BRAVO Baren, keep it up! Diane thanks for you patience, your time and most of all for the fine way you collated this exchange.
Please bare with me as this is not woodblock so do not read it if that bothers you. A note to those like Barbara, I have had a bad experience having a new computer built. We live in such a small town that we have a tendancy to be trusting. I had a card from a computer guy and when I got a piece of a floppy disk stuck in the drive I called and he came took the computer off and brought it back repaired. We told him our woes about our dead laptop and inquired his opinion on what we could do for Mexico. He came back in 10 minutes with this smalll computer, not a laptop but one that was a little bigger than a shoe box and had a case it fit in, one you could carry on an airplane. We excitedly ordered one to be built. We asked for our reboot disk and also for a pentium processor. Needless to say we got neither. We got a pirated
microsoft Windows XP program that would not validate, it stated it was pirated and told me to go to my vendor for a valid copy. He stated it would take 30 hours to take out the old program and put in a new valid one, so he took away the computer.(I found out this was a lie, all that had to be done was a valid disk inserted and follow directions on the screen) He brought it back with a valid upgrade disk, not a full program. I did not want him back here so I started reading everything I could find on this little computer. I educated myself! I read all I could find online about securing my computer and downloaded anti-spyware free through microsoft and had an infected file almost immediately. The voice was turned off on my sound and I reset other programs. I read how to upgrade my memory because this person gave us a celeron processor, not a
pentium and the lowest possible memory for the system to operate. How do people like this get away with taking advantage? FEAR! I got unafraid, unscrewed the back of the computer, found one memory module, talked with a tech and ordered what he recommended. Now my computer runs faster, I know more and I have no fear of building one myself. When I read how afraid peple are to try things like blogs or snapping in a memory module I will always remember this experience and say to you, no no do not have fear. Go there and learn. Sorry for diverting off subject, It is a warning for all of you to watch out, but also take the time to learn and throw away your fear. I feel EMPOWERED! My computer is wonderful, I love it and the next time I will order the parts and assemble it myself, that way I know I will get what I want! Forgive me for going off subject, it is a warning. Take care.
Marilynn Oh, how did I learn a lot? Through my microsoft msn page. I went in to find out all they could tell me about windows xp, how to clean it, how to manage the system, etc. All this info is there and free. And if you look around onlline you will find help to build yourself a great machine!

I've put up a progress report (with many photos) showing my long-term
project underway -- the design and manufacture of a large (about 5x10 feet)
woodblock printing press for 'shin moku-hanga' (new Japanese woodblock
prints). You can view my report and photos here: http://mlyon.com/blog --
I hope you might find this kinda interesting -- it's been an all-consuming
project of mine for many so months now -- I'm actually getting sorta
breathless as the thing finally begins to come together, and I'm keeping my
fingers and my toes crossed in hope that it'll actually WORK!

I remember you guys all laughing and calling me 'Rube Goldberg' when I
first described my sliding-drawer humidor registration 'invention' in our
forum, but that thing worked so well for me that I'll still be using a
hugely scaled-up version to place and register up to about 50x100 inch damp
sheets single-handed, so you may as well begin laughing again now! :-D

Of course, I'll be interested and excited to read your comments on the blog
(assuming that I've set the blog up to properly accept comments, of course)...

Best,

Mike

Hey, Great Job, Mike ... are you going to bring it along to the summit????
{;-}}}}

I will be interested to see how you manage to handle the paper. Just the
physical process of putting the paper in place would be a real trial.

How are you handling registration??? Do you plan to register the blocks to
the bed, pin the paper (or otherwise hold it in place) and then just go
through all the blocks for each print??? Or are you going to just leave
each block in place and go through all the prints in the edition?? Are you
planning to ink the block in place on the bed, or will you remove it for
inking. If you are going to ink it on the bed, how will you be able to
reach it all?

Cheers .... Charles

Beautiful print, Barbara, bravo! Aren't the patterns that naturally occur on these creatures inspiring?

I like the way it looks on the rough side too, Barbara, even though it was rough on you to print :)

all the best,

Jae,
Everyone is a beginner at some point...so just keep going and one day it will be old hat to you!
Sylvia will be a good teacher, I really like her work. This one did turn out well, much better than I had anticipated. I had a hard time deciding what to do with the background and finally decided to do nothing...in this case it was the best choice.
Best to all,
Barbara

Dear Charles,

I've designed a shallow 'chest of drawer' (one drawer) humidor larger than
the paper -- the drawer and humidor which contains it have a light weight
aluminum frame covered in Coroplast (corrugated plastic) and the drawer
itself moves horizontally in and out on 7-foot glides so when the drawer is
closed there will be an aisle between the humidor and the press to allow me
to move all around while brushing up the block. The drawer is not quite as
wide as the press and opens directly over the bed and block so I can slide
the long edge of the paper over the lip of the open drawer to (easily?)
register it to the block while the drawer supports the rest of the sheet so
it can't touch the inky surface of the block. Once I've properly
registered the sheet, the drawer will be allowed to close under the paper
as I hold it in place so it will be laid out neatly onto the surface of the
block as the drawer closes (more finger and toe crossing :)). The sheet
just printed gets peeled up from the far (humidor) side of the press and
after printing is placed inky side up into a similar humidor drawer (but
only 52" deep) which is supported right under the press bed and bottom
roller. I plan to print the 'usual' way, printing all papers in an edition
over each block before moving to the next block and flipping the just
printed sheets from the take-up drawer back to the feed drawer. Eventually
(if it works!) I'll post another article with photos and this'll be much
clearer, I imagine. The whole thing seems (and is) very risky!
