Hi Erin.......
The paste and the pigments are 'dabbed' unto the block and then mixed
together on the block using the maru-bake brush...this is the brush that
looks like a shoe brush. You need a lot less than you would think and as
Barbara mentioned a lot less water in the mix too. The trick is building a
good saturation into the brush. The only time you may want to mix it up
before hand is when using very light color washes with almost no
pigment...in this case you can use a small tile or something similar to
mix up your color and then directly apply this to the block.
The consistency of the paste and the pigment is 'pasty' to syrup-like
but it depends on which brands or type you are using. The strokes are sort
of random/circular all over the print area to make sure you get good
coverage and then you normally finish with very soft strokes across the
grain of the block to eliminate any brush marks from showing on the print.
You want to avoid a real 'wet' look/mess on the block...is more like the
'satin' feel that Barbara describes. Don't be afraid to get color all over
the place and in the carved out areas as this is inherent to the process.
If you have a small area to print other brush types can be used. After a
few impressions the brush is properly "warmed up" and it retains a certain
amount of stuff on it....
There are many fine articles on the barenforum.org website explaining the
process in detail...
good luck......Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois),
