I recently presented the folios from exchanges in which I have participated
to a colleague's beginning printmaking class. It was a time filled with oohs
and ahhs, and lots of questions. Thanks to everyone for their efforts over
the years. It is always fun to go back and see how much great art has been
made because of a little listserve.

Citrus cleaners usually are based on an extract of lemon or orange peel ...
look for d-limonene on the label or the MSDS sheet. It is an oily material,
but commercial products usually have it mixed with an emulsifier so it will
disperse in water. Locally I buy a concentrate called TKO Orange.
D-limonene is relatively non-toxic, very low volatility, so it is pretty
safe to use. It smells like oranges ... gives some folks a headache, so you
should use good ventilation. It will remove dried paint and dried inks very
effectively. You can find citrus based cleaners in large grocery stores,
health food stores, and janitorial supply outlets. It is also useful for
xerox transfers, however I have found it does not work with my new laser
printer although it works with my old one ... don't know why.

This is not exactly woodblock, either, but it could be, sort of. I
figure probably everyone already knows this, too; it is in response
to Barbara's comment about Akua not printing as rich and deep a black
as the oil base inks. This is more in relation to solar plate than
woodblock, but oh well! Many of us have used the Akua Intaglio inks
to roll up our woodblocks and printed successfully on dry paper, but
it never occurred to me to try intaglio on dry paper until a few
weeks ago when I tried it in desperation at the end of a very long
printing day. Voila! I got the most gorgeous blacks, with every
little nuance of gray, by printing a solar plate on DRY Somerset
Satin with the latest Akua Carbon Black Intaglio ink. So, there you
go – yet another success in desperation story.

I am just getting ready to start carving #27 and have ordered two strips of wood the same height as the blocks so I can make a registration board for them. I have rigged a few but this will be the first time for one made out of the right wood exactly the same as the blocks. I am using all shina. Once I prove this works I will try to get pictures up on my "blog" . All these new words...sort of amazing. But I am shocked when I find people don't have email, so guess I have joined the new world. I am going to use moku hanga for this print if it kills me, I don't want to forget how to do it! Ha. My only concern is the damp block might get ink on the strip and show on the print, I need to figure some way to offset this...I am sure I can figure it out.
