I'm in Santa Fe for the week and did my one day at the Canyon Road galleries yesterday. I briefly looked at some Gustave Baumann images at one gallery. I've never been exactly sure why he commands such high prices, reverence, and awe, but they were some nice pieces and I'm glad I saw them.
Does anyone know much about his process? There seems to be a good deal of transparency to the ink, but it also seemed quite thick at the same time. One landscape in particular seemed to have a stippled effected (actually, like a negative stipple where holes were in the layer of a certain color) to the layers. It looked nice, but I'm not sure if this was easily replicated in each piece or if it may have been sloppy printed that happened to work in the final product--a little like Munch.

tyrus I was in Santa fe two weeks ago, There seems to be a very active
art gallery scene in Santa Fe most of it rather retro & upper class tourist
motivated. Willard F. Clark & Gustave Baumann were two artists that are very
popular because they did prints based on figuative images of Santa Fe from the
first part of the 20th century.
A book about Baumann HAND OF A CRAFTSMAN the woodcut technique of Gistave
Baumann by David Actpm mus. of new Mexico press.
Second book REMEMBERING SANTA FE written & illustrated by Willard F. Clark
gibbs smith pub.
The book about Baumann goes into a great deal of info on how he did his
prints including color proofs of each block and a series building up to the
finished print.

"Old work" is something I have always wondered about. Why do we date our work? Is it to show historians in the future when a piece was created? Or is it to say to people doing shows that the work is new and eligible for showing? When an upcoming show states that they want work no more than 2 years old I always wonder why??? Is the work I created 3 years ago no longer of value? I rarely date my work any more because, to me, it does not matter which year it was created. If the work is good than it is, period, and the year I did it has nothing to do with how good or bad it is. Awhile back some were wondering about numbering a series, I wonder about dating it?
