I am having a strange thing happen with the list...when I send a reply...I never get it myself, but sometimes someone will reply, so I think it went to the list.

When I send one I compose, I receive it...anyone else had this problem? Maybe there are gremlems on the list or maybe they are in my computer...
best to all,

Marco, since you are living, to my knowledge, on the west coast of the US you should be able to find basswood planks easily and at a good price. Jan is isolated and unfortuately for her she needs to get supplies sent to her. The prices she quoted are high for those of us in the US. Your work is wonderful and you are an experienced wood carver. Take Mike's advice and give a basswood plank a shot. I am betting you will never again want to carve on shina. I get my planks at a hardwood specialty store, try your yellow pages and see if one is listed. Good luck!
Murilo, as far as I know anyone who joins Baren can come to the summit. It is free to be a member and it is fun and also this list is filled with a lot of wonderful information. I would tell the university lady to go to the Baren website and sign up, than she can come to the summit. She will have a year to read our comments and get to know us via the list and than will feel welcomed.Marilynn

Marco,
I went searching for Bay Area options myself and actually stumbled on this
in the Baren archives (you're in SF, right?):

Hello to my fellow printmakers at Baren!
My name is Lori Biwer-Stewart from Iowa. I was recently informed about
baren by another artist and am excited to be a participating member of
this forum. For a few years now I have been working exclusively with
linoleum, but would like to start using wood. I know nothing about what
kind of supplies would be best. After reading some previous postings, I
have heard Shina plywood mentioned quite often. Does someone out there
have any suggestions about supplies that would make the transition from
linoleum to wood as stress free as possible?
If you would like to see my work my web address is:

Hi Lori,

I'm new here too. Also fairly new to woodblock printing, but I feel I've
found my home.

This looks like a great place to me. Lots to learn. 8-]

I absolutely love your linocuts, especially the subject matter. You are so
delicate with your touch. I have never tried that medium but I'm up to
trying everything eventually.

You can check out some of my work at the link below. Follow it to Etchings,
Etc.

I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Hi Paula...Welcome to Baren! I am in Centennial, CO and although my work is
not currently primarily traditional Japanese style, I am slowly but surely
headed in that direction. Here is my printmaking "Blog" : _LarimerArt_
(http://larimerart.blogspot.com/) At this late hour I am pulling prints/proofs from a
woodcut that I started to do as "Hanga" but because of frustration it is
ending up as a print done with oil based ink. Later tonight/early morning I will
post my experiment to my blog. You will enjoy the wealth of information and
camaraderie on the Baren site. Jim
