Thanks so much for the input about glue. The repairs I've made on my blocks
are the kind April spoke of - little popped chips that are critical to the
design. I'm using shina plywood and am probably asking too much of it in
terms of fineness of line! (Not to mention that I'm totally unskilled at
carving...) But I'm learning my limits, and will probably end up either
working bigger or moving to a solid/harder wood. Meanwhile, I'm off to buy
some crazy glue!

Also want to tell you that I've started a blog of my own that will chronicle
this learning journey - kind of a "Newbie's Journal." I know you've all been
there and done that, but if you're interested in taking a peek, you can go
to http://woodblockdreams.blogspot.com

Oh, and thanks for the links, Harry. Great stuff at the British Museum's
website!

Draw on the block directly!?
No transferring, no mess, no solvents, no carving through tissue, no
waiting...
Then once the key block is carved, print onto mylar or even glassine using a
registration guide. Take key block out leaving the paper in place, place
second block in guide, lower glassine onto fresh block...repeat to taste.

I have a lot of text and lettering in my blocks transfers just work
very well for this.

Recently I just finished cutting the blocks for my wood cut version of a
Passover Haggadot 80 pages of text. I could not have done it with out using
transfers.

drawing on a block what a new idea got to try it. maria.

Anne,
I thoroughly enjoyed your blog and also seeing your illustrative work...there is so much talent on the baren. We are an amazing group. I envy you being close enough to take a class from Matt Brown, those of us who have been on the baren for a long time remember when he posted occasionally. Now I know he is just too busy to read the emails. I really like his work and have a couple of his prints. You did a great print for your first effort. I know Matt uses rives heavyweight for his prints...I have tried it but haven't been able to get his results. Domestic etching is also another surprise. I think I will get some for my students to try...it would be so good to find a paper that is locally availabale that works and only costs $1 for a huge sheet. I might try the rives again, I haven't used it for several years and know my skills have increased a bit since then!
Good work. Keep carving.
Best to you,
Barbara

And on the watery side....either draw on your key block directly, or
transfer with non-toxic carbon paper. Then carve your key block
accordingly, print off as many copies (I use sumi paper) as you will
need for your color blocks - glue them (face down, remember) with rice
paste or methyl celulose, onto your color blocks & you are all set. If
you have transfered your kento to your 'transfer prints' everything
will line up & no toxic (or even smelly, unless you think wet paper is
smelly) fumes. My favorite transfer methods. And yes, the wintergreen
& the citrus solvents give me a headache.

Comerical wood engravers in the late 19th century would print photographs on
the wood blocks before engraving them. Before photo's were use they would
draw directly on the block.

Barbara Mason, our Mall Manager, has informed me that she will no longer
ship exchange cases to coordinators (this will make both her job and that
of the coordinator much easier), so cases will be shipped directly to you
when you order a case from the mall:
http://www.barenforum.org/mall/products/exchange_cases.html -- until we get
the Mall page for cases updated with proper size information, please be
sure to let the Mall know what SIZE case you are ordering (oban or chuban)
in your comments with each order!

If you'd like 'official' Baren labels for your exchange cases, you can now
easily and quickly print 'em yourself -- I've uploaded an editable PDF
label for you here:
http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/images/case_label.pdf -- click the link,
then edit the two fields on the form where it says "Exchange # 88" so it
shows the correct exchange number (there's room for a little additional
info on the spine if you like) and print it -- just be sure that
'auto-rotate and center' and 'NO scaling' are selected!

Thanks,

Mike

This is so cool!
Ordered my case for Exchange 24 and now I'm going to print my label.
So much easier.
Thanks Mike!
