Well, I only have one thing to add to Robin's delightful account of the Los
Angeles Baren Mini-Summit, and that is...chili relleno!
Yes, you heard me right, Robin forgot to mention his own culinary prowess
and delighted all with wit, charm, vast knowledge and talent on a variety of
subjects, not the least of which was a scrumptious plate of chili rellenos.
For those of you who don't know what that is, well, maybe Google can help
(burp!).
Other than that, this "dynamo" (heh) was tired and my drive was not nearly
as long. But, right again, I would also do it again next weekend.
On fame and such, I just did a local channel television ditty to promote
some of the County's Art programs and I had a blast. Dave's partly right, no
phone calls or emails other than from friends saying: "I saw you on TV". But
I say partly because a funny thing starts to happen when you "get out there"
as an artist or craftsman. It's like backwards marketing and it does help
make you a bit richer and certainly a bit more known, although famous would
definitely be stretching it.
People hear your name, they see the newspaper articles and maybe they catch
a TV spot where you appear all enthusiastic-like telling them how to make a
woodcut. Some other time they search for art things in Vegas and come upon
your website. All this enters and leaves their attention without
registering...until!
There you are at an art festival or gallery show and they exclaim: "I have
seen you on TV!" "I have seen you on the news!" "You are everywhere!"
Sometimes they even buy something from you because, at some level, you do
get famous, at least for that person.
So see? They _did_ pay attention and you do get some recognition but you
just can't sit at home waiting for the world to come and hand you money and
glory. It takes getting out there and staying out there in the cold and
rain, even when nobody is paying attention.
That's my take on those little opportunities, anyway; it isn't about
marketing, really. I always always welcome any chance to talk about woodcuts
and art to an audience no matter how small. You just don't know what child
is watching and will maybe "convert" to the arts...maybe even to woodcuts!
Speaking of such, yours truly will be in Home&Garden Network Television
later this year. The show Crafters Coast to Coast came "casting" in Las
Vegas and I raised my hand (I think I was actually just waving at someone,
but...). Anyhow, several emails and phone calls later and it appears as
though I made the cut and will be showing housewives across America how to
make a puzzle color woodcut.
Filming is in May in my studio and the spot should air a few weeks later.
The network www.hgtv.com keeps files on past programs, so the steps involved
in making a puzzle woodcut will be their archives for everyone to see (and
so will my website!). I will announce dates and such in a couple of months.

Congratulations David, I will try to download the TV show, but not
having Broadband, it will probably take more time than I usually have. I
can only hope that you will be attending this summer's Summit, as it
would be marvelous watching you work in 'real time'.

Congrats Dave, loved the tv program! I have to admit I also liked the beginning of the program, with the women playing music with many little stuffed animals propped up as part of the band :)

engravings/mezzotints intaglio. Barbara mentioned Arches 88 as a
possibility, but don't soak it. It is a waterleaf and should just be
misted and used. Somerset Satin might be one to try, too (it can be
soaked or prepared in a paper pack) - it is my favorite as it has
enough body and is smooth enough to get every little detail and nuance.
It also accepts layers and layers of color. Keep us informed of your
experiments, please :-)

I said Arches Cover, not Arches 88, Sharri was in lala land as usual, I have to watch her carefully! I don't think Arches 88 would ever work for intaglio unless you were using Akua Kolor...it gives a fair impression on dry paper but not as good as damp paper. Damp paper will always pull more ink off the plate and oil based ink will work much better than waterbased for intaglio. Add some easy wipe or really polish the surface of the block to get a clean wipe.
