I am looking for a list of books printed on printmaking in general and on
relief printmaking in particular.

Sharri I like your definition of art and your insight. I have found in my own work that often
the happy accident often gives me the finest pieces. It is the creative solution to something
that did not go the way it was planned that often gives me new direction. I agree that it does
not matter why the work was created, only that it has value over time. Your definition of good
art leaves room for those of us who like to experiment. Often when you try interesting things
you do not follow the "rules", but go a direction that expresses the image you have in mind.
In my mind it is the self expression that matters more than the process. But on the flip
side of the coin look at the creative process a person like Mike Lyon has invented. It seems
creativity for new direction is often what gives you a place in history.

Hello. My name is Beth. I've been following the [Baren] posts for a good
while and I'm preparing myself for a nice adventure into some serious time
invested in working in woodcut. I like to think I've done a ton of reading
(feels like it, not without pleasure though!) yet I still have a few
questions for anyone experienced and who might feel compelled to kindly
answer:

a) What is the difference in the terms "woodcut" and "woodblock" printing?

b) Where can I find great close-up photos and extensive explanations of the
creation/manufacture of a traditional baren, why each step is taken in the
way that it is, the specific qualities each step will exude in the finish
product to make it worthwhile to include?

c) Color. I'm wanting to try Akua-kolor. What have others used that they
like and why do they like it?

I've been roaming around the encyclopedia, done several searches, but gosh
after awhile I feel like I'm spending more time searching when instead I'd
rather be working in the process itself.

Thank you in advance,

Beth

I think it is that woodcut is traditionally printed in oil based ink and is often used interchangably
with the word wood engraving. Engravings are done on the end grain or cross grain of the wood,
woodcuts and woodblocks are done on the plank of the wood.

>c) Color. I'm wanting to try Akua-kolor. What have others used that they

If you decide to use akua kolor I can give you lots of help, it is easier to roll it on than
brush it on. It acts a lot like oil based ink as it stays wet for a long time. This has it's
advantages. The trick with rolling any ink on is to have it thin on the slab, thin on the roller
and put lots of layers on the block. Usually you will be using a small roller, so you need to go
back to the slab and pick up ink often as rolling it more on the block will not magically produce
more ink, it will just move around what is there. It is a real temptation to just keep rolling even
though the roller has long since run out of ink. You want the ink thin, it will always give you a
better print.Roll from the center of the block to the edges. Using the kento system of registration
you can print a second time with the same color if you did not get it dark enough the first time.
Wanda did a reduction print I saw once where she kept using the same color as she carved, so each
layer was the same color but darker. It was enormously successful and hard to believe it was all
the same color.

If you decide to brush the color on, you will probably have better results with watercolor or
pure pigments dispersed in water with a little alcohol and rice paste.

I know there are pictures of the baren insides somewhere, a few on the mall page here http://www.barenforum.org/mall/products/hon_baren.php

Best to you,

Barbara

HI ALL:
Did anybody buy the plans to the etching press that Julio just mentionesd?
http://www.dougforsythegallery.com/Press.html

If so, please share ideas. Perhaps someone has seen free plans for presses
on the web.
I have my own press (Not factory made, for instance), but it would be of
utility for many artist that I know.
