Maria,
These are just so fine, congratulations on the commission and the great work you have done making it a reality. They will certainly be getting their money's worth this year! And you are right, the paper makes them pop!
Dave,
I got such a hoot out of the magazine article...at least they did not make you look like a crazed artist...you look sort of young and intense! What a great thing to have. I'll bet your kids will really get a kick out of this! Wish we could read Japanese!
Thanks to all who responded about the possible juried show...I will pursue it as there seems to be interest in doing it. I will let you know if we can make it happen.
Best to all,
Barbara
Maria, wonderful prints. I can see that the hand made paper really accents
the work. Paper is such a big lesson. I had one print that just would not
work, I knew the composition was good, but it just did not come across well.
Than I found a beautiful paper, one that accented the piece, it is now a
favorite. That was back when I was doing linoblocks. CONGRAGULATIONS,
your work is very impressive.

Hi there:
I've been looking for a less expensive source for
'Swiss Made' Pfeil woodcarving tools, than Woodcraft.
Has anyone on the list done business with:
FEATHER ANIMATION
915 Michigan Ave, Sarnia, Ontario N7V 1L7
519) 542-8504
http://www.woodcarvingsupply.com
rnesbitt@ebtech.net
Their prices are much lower than Woodcraft, but I
would like to hear from anyone whom has bought from
this company, before I order.
I would also be interested in learning of European
sources for Pfeil tools.
Thanks,
Eli

My goodness I do run in auspicious circles! David, I, too, have the
treasure chest on a table (safe from what little sunlight comes through
WA state windows) for all to enjoy with me. I enjoyed reading the
comics again - what a treat to know the main character, even if you
can't understand a word he says... I was impressed with how the artist
had captured you and your enthusiasm in one of the drawings
particularly. You da man!
Maria - you and your papermaker are a fab team. Is she incorporating
colored pulp or dropping in colored dyes? Papermaking is a kick, isn't
it? You quickly come to understand why paper mills were always on a
river - and why paper makers had over developed upper body strength. I
think Arnold must have been a paper maker in another life. LOL
Some marvelous roosters are collecting in my space - and now, thanks to
Peter, I know how to crow in 30 different languages! Kidding aside, I
am very impressed and the rooster himself - he is gorgeous. I feel so
lucky :-) My rooster is ready to proof next week.
Carol, I'm with you, all of this is wicked nice.

Maria ! great work and congratulations on completing your set-
the hand made paper is indeed contributing its depth ,
color and texture to your print
White Pine is wonderful -my favorite !
i find it interesting that so many Bareners
are extremely, happily ,busy with woodcut projects
all over the world
we are, i think , a stimulating group to partake in...
as Mary Kuster said
to receive all the different papers and prints of each exchange
is an opportunity ,
and i share them with other artists friends
i learn so much every time i get a set of Baren Prints
now i have had the opportunity
to share them on a larger scale in my community
and ,
I am happy to report,
to those of you who like to update their resumes,
that my show , which includes many prints from Baren ,
opened friday nite
at The university of Maine at Machias
( about half way between the equator and the north pole =parallel 43)
and will continue throughout february '05
like Maria , i was working LONG hours each day to get the show hung.
in january, i used up a one pound can of Van Son BLACK ink
printing all the work i didn't have copies of.
it was so cold that i put a little candle
under my ink plate to make it warm enough to print .
the frost kicked the deck of my studio up so high
i could not open the door .
thus i had to walk upstairs , downstairs , and upstairs again,
just to get my work out and over to the college
which is four miles from where i live
i have had one woman shows before throughout Maine,
but i had never before filled two large, adjacent gallery rooms
with just my work .
or presented my entire body of work at one time.
30 years of work
like Maria,
i did the MAINE art show circuit (for 11 years)
and hauled and schelped , alot !
but to bring work to well- lit, dry ,
spacious, warm,
gigantic rooms,
with an automatically opening door ,
two students to help set up
and my truck parked right outside it
was the 'aging artists heaven'
i was able to hang : along with 145 Gatto woodcuts; 20 carved woodblocks,
my woodcut collages and painting

unlike Maria ,
i am not a computer savvy super woman ,
who then goes home and
whips it onto the website
VOILA ! Hats off to Maria !!
UMM college art dept is lending me a their good digital camera
so I can document the show
when that occurs
i will show/ tell you more..........
the UMM website is down for revision
but as soon as that's up again
we should get some pics on it
the turn out was heart warming.
at the reception ,
i demonstrated simple small lino carving and printing
i sold three prints,
and had at least three inquiries
about prints in the exchanges ,
this a big music and nature oriented
,very small campus ,
so I will be contacting those artists off list
to see if they are interested in selling a copy of their prints
last night was the happiest night of my art life,
so thank you BAREN members
for being
the stimulating motivators you are
and keep up the good work everyone...

Maria, it's fun watching this project unfold and come to fruition. And
that paper! You are so right about how it enhances the images. I want
to ask you a question about your cutting. Do you use only gouges when
cutting, or do you also use a knife? I have always liked the
expressiveness of your lines.
Dave, the artist kind of captured something of your expression in a few
of those panels. It's quite an honor, don't you think? I would love
to be featured in a comic book. I always have liked the
autobiographical genre of comics, especially "American Splendor"
(which inspired the film by the same name) and own a few copies of
them, some of them even signed by Harvey Pekar since he lives in the
Cleveland area nearest large city to where I live. Congratulations!

Gruezi Eli,

Gouges only; wide array from 1mm for very fine details (hardly used at all
in this project) to 1 inch for clearing...whack whack!
I really feel like I "draw" mostly with the gouges; v-chisels to outline and
do line work and u-chisels to clear and get those strange bowl like shapes.
Most of the image develops as I cut, although for this project I did draw in
with ink more detail than my usual practice.
I also like the negative areas left by the gouges and how they interact to
make textured surfaces.
My poor knives (I have three) sit unused except for very very fine line
details which aren't exactly abundant in my repertoire.
Re Sharri's questions about the paper:
MJ uses only pulps of different colors, pretty much "pulp painting" those
swirly papers. She can chime in here anytime, but I believe the papers were
made with hickory, clay, cotton fibers, plant fibers, abaca, day lily, wheat
straw and lordie knows what else she sticks in her beater :-)
Oh, and she's about the same size I am! Just 'bout 5'2" but feisty.
Maria

DAVE:
That's you in the manga!!!
That manga drawer is a genius, I can see not only your image, but the
psicology of the hanga printer, even we don't understand the text.

Wow Gillyin, congratulations...what an outstanding body or work and long
artistic career...I am really honored to have your work in my collection,
please take lots of pictures for our web page and send me exhibit
information off list so I can update the barenforum.org Exhibit's page.
Awesome !!!!
Maria, the prints look great and they are going to look so fantastic
hanging next to those amazing woodblocks...
what's next ?.... Has the White House called yet ?
Dave, what can I say...they really captured your passion...you look like
you are about 20 years old...so cool !
I like that shirt you are wearing...you look like a Zen master ;-) Was
this the manga artist himself reflecting on his youth or what could have
been ? Did he ever try going moku hanga ? or was this a fictitious young
artist in the story........what a hoot indeed !
Also congratulations to John Center for his January show/exhibit at the
Unicorn Cafe in Evanston Illinois. John send me some pics offlist so we
can update the Events & Activities page.
thanks to everyone for sharing their activities, this is a really an
active and accomplished group.....

I have no idea at all how much of his part of the story is real or
fictitious. This story is one episode in a continuing series in which
he meets people who affect his life. But it's been going on for years
now, so I suspect a lot of it must be pretty contrived, or he would
have been 'affected' into Einstein by now! At the end of each year, the
stories are collected into a manga 'book', which he tells me becomes
quite a good seller each year ...
