for Dina-
in my own opinion- you could - not make a big deal about
from what "reference" you drew and carved YOUR image .
All artists draw from many references: models, memory , photos ,
life, still life , other artists' images , and , of course: their own
imagination .
Why not rethink your own beliefs about your art, before projecting them
onto the gallery owner ?
you merely used the rooster as a model.
Your own words were , " the rooster image is not my own"
- I say to you ,-- Why isn't an image
that Dina Cody drew, carved and printed ,
not her own ?
The little rooster in the Chinese painting stimulated your imagination, and
YOU created Dina's rooster--
Don't apologize for him-
love him and
share him with as many people as you can !
I can't wait to see ALL the rest of the roosters as they fly in one by one
it is quite a treat to have walked my quqrter- mile driveway to my mail box
when it's ten below zero , a brisk wind , and two feet of snow on ground-
happily , to find a new rooster in the box !
so far i have gotten almost ten i think
i love everyones' senses of humor,
and uses of color , and stunning
stunning black and whites
and the one printed with styrofoam cartons
was very interesting in how the ink laid on the paper
what fun !
i have ten more prints to print today
to complete my 140-something for
my retro-future-spective show
which opens NEXT friday
and one is - the eight foot eagle
hand rubbing rubbing that block,
with a teflon speedball baren,
will keep me warm

Dina,
Go for it. You are using only an element from someone else's work, not
their design, color, etc. What you are doing is perfectly legitimate
and you may or may not give appropriation to the artist. If you were
copying their entire work it would be different, but as long as it is
only an element, and particularly if it is a small one, you don't need
to recognize the other person. These are post-modern times - we are
free to do just about anything under the sun and the Art Police will
just walk right on by, munching their Krispy Kremes and slurping their
Starbucks........

I have been running the mall for several years, with varing degrees of competance..sometimes in my busy life I miss an order and Sadako, my shadow in Japan, catches it and reminds me. If this were a perfect world all would always go smoothly...thank goodness for Sadako as she makes the mall possible, it could not run without her.
A year ago in the winter I was not feeling well and the mall almost fell apart. Thank goodness I got well and all seems to be running on schedule lately. This being said, I found out this morning that an order from October that was paid for by check, not visa, was never ordered from Japan. All the while the customer thought the boat was just sloooooow. This one was totally my fault.
If you order from the mall and do not have your order in two or three weeks, please, please let me know and I will see what went wrong. Sometimes it is my fault, sometimes a piece is missing and we are awaiting it to ship.
I always send you an email and let you know when I have received confirmation of an order leaving Japan. If you do not get this email from me, it has not happened and is not on the boat, especially since all orders come air express and arrive in just a few days after leaving Japan.
If you do not give me a good email address, I cannot contact you. Kathryn Polk, your order shipped this morning form Japan, but you gave me a web site, not an email address.
As you guys all know, I am a volunteer and an imperfect one at best, so let me know if things go wrong and I will try to fix them! If you wait months to contact me....it will be months before we can fix things.
The entire Baren Forum is an all volunteer organization with many people putting in hours of volunteer time. If you want to help..let someone on the council know and we will gladly use you. I am sure some of us are wearing out a bit and need some fresh energy!

Dina,it seems perfectly OK to me especially since I think copyright lasts 50
years!

My name is Paco and I'm new to this forum and new to
woodblock printing, although years ago I did some
lino. So I'm coming into this forum hoping to take
advantage of everyone else's experience (hopefully
I'll be able to give something back, eventually).
I do have a quick question to ask right away. I've
been using Speedball waterbased block printing ink,
not the most sophisticated option, I know, and I'm
trying to get an effect of transparent layers of
color. Apparently Speedball sell extender and retarder
for block printing that would have this effect but I'm
having difficulty finding anyone that actually sells
the stuff. Are there any other options (maybe some
kind of acrylic medium?) that wouldn't require mixing
my own ink from scratch(I'll get to that sooner or later).

Speedball makes a product called type B watersoluble extender, it is for silkscreen but will work fine with the block printing ink. It is about $5 for a 4 oz jar. Most art stores carry this, be sure to get the one that says water soluble and not acrylic.
Do not use acrylic, it dries too fast and will cause you way more trouble than you expected. if you cannot find this extender you might try mat medium, but this is a polymer product and does dry fast, so you will have to work quickly with it, but it does thin with water. It will not get wet after it is dry, so be careful and clean up as you go. It can fill in your lines pretty easily on your block if you do not clean it up often.
