Mike, those paintings of Mt. rainier were all from the 1800's and early
1900's. Weird in a way, they must be either done from old photos or old
wood carvings. I would imagine the images were not ones that were either
copied exactly or had no copy writes. It was weird to see Japanese style
figures with those Japanese umbrellas standing on a bridge near a mountain
in washington state. The paintings seem to be of a limited palette, like a
woodcut might have been. Also very shape oriented, again a lot like a
woodcut. Someone has a good thing going as most of them were sold and the
prices were over a thousand dollars apiece. I found it a bit strange to
look at Mt. Rainier like one might look at Mt. fuji or some other Japanese
mountain. Interesting tho. Maybe we should all take our woodcut mages and
make paintings in Japanese style and sell them for a grand apiece, good
pocket change. And I am with Barbara, it just did not look like I remember
Mt. Rainier looking.

Mike,
So, these are paintings of prints? I don't understand - why would anyone do this? People are funny, indeed. What a nifty way of never having to come up with your own composition, color choices, etc: Just copy something someone else has already done who is, hopefully, dead by now and free of copyright infringement issues. Oh barf.

i found the painting to be interesting esp since he added the american
mountain. By doing this there were not just straight copies but something
quite different. In fact I have never seen such an idea Why should cross
fertilization only go one way? Enough new material done in a totally
different media so to me they are in fact original work.

Seasons greetings to all! I've finally caught up on reading the postings
(since 11/17) and really enjoyed reading the news, comments and concerns
after such a break. I do have one request, however.

Could we please, pretty please, close the Year of the Rooster exchange at
some definite point? Some time soon? Chicken prints have already arrived,
and someone recently wrote they were pleased to have just sent out their 47
fowl. Yet, I counted 50 names last night while formatting the list for
mailing labels. Why would those who promptly send out their printlets want
to go back to the list and look for new names in March or April? I
certainly won't be highly motivated to do that.
