Hello!
I am a relatively new baren member. I've been skulking
about reading posts for a few weeks and I thought it
was time to jump in. I am looking to solicit advice on
ink additives for oil-based inks. Most of my work
involves bold linework and single plates, so I have
never had reason to alter the inks in any way.
However, I'm currently working on a reduction print
where I need a lighter (less dense) look to my first
layer of ink. It is a sky which I am printing in a
very light neutral tone (almost white). It needs to be
solid enough that the white line figures I have carved
show up, but overall have, well... a "sky-like"
thinness to it. Any suggestions?
(Hopefully you will be able to see the fruits of your
advice in the swap shop when I finish the print!)
David,
The Milne piece was a real treat. Thank you for sending it. From time
to time we must all question why we feel compelled to make art - why we
are so driven when no one else seems to care what we do. It is
refreshing to think that we are contributing more than just being
another drone in the scheme of things.
I had an Opening last Thursday night and a gentleman introduced himself
to me by saying that we had something in common: you. He is also a
collector of your work and he had seen my name on a list. I really
enjoyed talking to him, but have mislaid his name - my mental card file
does not seen to function as efficiently as it once did!
Keep up the good work, Fellow Artists! We are valued by somebody!

Thank You David for reproducing this. I am sure I have it on my shelves somewhere in the house and I enjoyed it no end. Milne always wanted to be thought of as a serious writer but Pooh et al (Which also started off as magazine contributions - I have the editions of "Punch" that first featured them) dogged him. I still enjoy looking at my copies of the Pooh books - mainly for Shepard's glorious drawings - but I also like Milne's essays and more serious stuff.
Sittin here with inky fingers!
Andy

I'm still going to participate. I didn't know we had to contact you. Do you need any other info from me yet? -Amanda Lebel
Anna,
If you want the ink less opaque, add some transparent base to your ink, maybe 50%. Transparent base is made for all oil based inks, you should use the for the ink you have. I use lithography ink and use the one made by graphic chemical for that ink. Roll the ink out very thinly, you will still get a lot of color if you use a strong color, but it will look less opaque and give you the look you desire. What ink are you using???
Best to you,
Barbara Mason
