Hi Charles,
I did the same thing when I got your prints, using a gum eraser - the
offset text came off completely, and the prints look great! Thanks,
Shireen

Aimee, you can be assured Dave's "Digester" took care of the problem,
at least in the new html version of the daily digest which probably
about half of us have chosen to subscribe to instead of the messages
coming to us one by one. For the people who do receive the Baren
messages one by one, they, of course, saw the whole thing but I'm sure
they understand. We've all done something like this at one time or
another -- so easy to click that button, then follow it with a big
"Oooops". :-)

Hmmm ... It tried this link, and I just got to the home page. I could not
find a version of their list of accredited programs on line. Apparently you
can pay $15 for a hard copy or $15 for a "searchable copy", but it does not
seem to be available for free ... pity .... If anyone knows of a freely
available list, that would be helpful.
Cheers ...... Charles
Dan,
Here is the response from my friend Martha Pfanschmidt who teaches at Marylhurst University and went through this program for her MFA a few years ago. I think she did have to go there at least once, but Vermont is a lot closer to you than it is to us here in Oregon. Martha is the queen of the messotint. Her work it amazing. You can see it here:

Best to you,

For woodblock I'm planning about the US Post Office would you please let me
know off-line whether your US Post Office has put up the photos of the 7 Most
Wanted Terrorists.
Include your city and state.
Thank you.

Go to the following URL at their site. Scroll down to the bottom of the
page. There is a simple name, city, state form. Leave all fields blank and
click the "Submit" button. The following screen will display all 245
accredited schools with links to further info for each school.

Yes, the three blocks (each reduced four times) for my self-portrait were
basswood -- probably would have been better if the magazine had just called
it a woodblock print, but I'm not really complaining -- thrilled to have
been included on the page, and thought Barbara's smeary etching with the Da
Vinci chalk coloration and Julio's New Yorker style graphic were stand-outs!

Regarding the thread about BFA/MFA degree programs, I can hardly keep my
opinion to myself much longer. It's my opinion, and it was my opinion when I
was a professor of art at the UW, that standards used by NASAD are helping
burial of the art spirit (for lack of better words) in US American values.
It might have been an exception, but when I taught at Shoreline Community
College last year, I found the faculty and administration playing games with
credits, salaries, FTE and benefits - spending MUCH more time on these
self-serving, short term concerns than the outlook for the students.
Everything was conditional on how things fit in last century's system.
Now someone like Dan Dew who's thinking ten years out in the future is not,
in my opinion, going to gain much by conforming to an organization that
sticks to a policy of "no distance learning allowed" (if I read a recent
comment correctly) with the present century's growth in globe-wide media
usage.
I think NASAD people are a pretty happy lot as long as they have their
benefits and retirement sewn up, and they seem to think the world's economy
will always support their habits. And, who knows, maybe the world will
continue to give them their portion of the booty. But I think if you believe
that, you'll believe anything.
Do I sound angry? This is a happy forum, and a lot of learning is going on
here, so please bear with me; I'm not poisoning the well, only asking that
the water quality be checked. I wonder if a college printmaking teacher
(NASAD) would demean barenforum.org because it's learning at a distance.
Can you imagine a student getting credit for using what he or she learned
here? Dont' tell NASAD!

Hi John,
Heck, you don't need a password to participate in baren. If you are
signed on as a member, just send a post to
and it will appear on the list. If you aren't a member yet, just go to
http://barenforum.org and sign up. Welcome!

Thanks, Scott,
That was very helpful. On a quick perusal, I did not see any Canadian
institutions listed. There is no mention of University of Victoria,
University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, etc., all of whom
have active fine art departments and offer degrees at various levels. And
of course there was no mention of programs in Great Britain or Europe. Does
anyone know if there is some similar certification board for Canadian,
British, or European art programs?
Cheers ...... Charles
My apologies to those who are offended by multiple posts ....
I note that the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, which I mentioned
earlier, is a member, and they do offer on-line degrees. So apparently some
on-line programs are recognized.
Cheers ...... Charles
I went to grad school at columbia college in chicago they were very good
at getting students to think out side of the box. It was at the chicago
center for the book in the inter-arts deptment. No problem with mixing you
media or ideas off my soap box
on relief printing i have made a wounderful discovery the effect of
puting danish oil on maple wood engraving blocks. It makes it engrave more like
box wood. Not as good as box but better than engraving plain maple
blocks. It makes the wood harder and more even in texture. Like sealing a wood
block with shealac or varnish but it is absorbed into the wood.

Dave, thanks for posting the Amer. Artist item on Baren. However, all kudos for this article go to Gayle Ayers of PrintmakingLinks .... she is the author and instigator of this piece .....
Is it too much to hope that a yearly exchange can be worked out between the three groups. This one was very stimulating..... the great variety of printing methods and the experimental approach seemed to work well.
