The program that Princess Rashid mentioned is one I got excited about, then
found out it would not be accepted by UT. And Even the local jr college is
pushing full time studio people to get a doctorate after their MFA. If I had
jumped in to that program counting on teaching at UT, that would have been a real
disappointment. Which is why thoroughly looking at one's goals is important.
And paying off the almost $100,000 student loans I owe for myself and my
daughter would have been one of the things I wanted to do with that at the time.
Any way, I am now into the workshops for personal growth mode.
Shar had a lot of good points too!

I have a Books Arts/press arts colleague who was a guest artist at Bard a few years ago to present a term for handmade books. She felt it was very productive and recommended the school. She also thought that mentoring in your home city would during off-campus time was a good idea for continuity.

Thanks for posting it Dave, I haven't seen the real thing yet as my local store does not have it...I will have to go into Portland to get one. I am terribly flattered to be included in this.....what a high. Usually you don't get into a national magazine until you are dead!
I was an alternate in this exchange so did it after the fact very quickly....but maybe that thinking gets us in trouble and just doing it is the key!

I finally decided to give it a go. Many people gave me advice on
different things and I thank you all for that. I tried something easy
the first go around. I used a piece of maple raw from the lumber
yard. Some suggested other woods after I bought this one. One thing
i learned is that maple is hard to see the transfer with. Another
lesson I learned is how important it is to have a perfectly flat piece
of wood for both the transfer to work and for the printing. Yet
another lesson is that the paper needs to be wet some. I have not
figured this one out yet. I did not have the right paper. I used
arches cover instead because that is what i had in stock.

Forgive the amature style . There was a limit to how much i invest
before trying something first. I liked how it turned out. I went
over the print with a brush to add some more tones to it.

I started by drawing a sharpie image on a nice chunk of maple block
that I cut from a plank.

Hi Thomas,

Congratulations on your first print! What an accomplishment of design
and printing :) This is the beginning of a printmaker's life. Be
prepared....its addicting. You have a good set up and some good tools I
see. I've only been printing Moku-Hanga (water-basedd) for 20 months.
Glad you're here at Baren and thanks for sharing your first print with
us . I'm very proud for you.

Hi everyone (apologies to the baren folks that may not want to read this,
please ignore this post if you are in that catagory)

My apologies for the delay in getting this brief update out. I've been
caught out by family concerns and have been overseas as a result (nothing
pleasant unfortunately ), but I'm back now so you will be hearing a lot
more form me. I also had a very nasty hard disk failure so have rebuilt my
machine and have lost a few bits and bobs in the crash and burn. My
apologies if things seem slightly askew. Just mail me and I'll make
corrections. I'm posting this to baren rather than to all of you
individually as this hard disk failure wiped out some of the addresses.

A couple of people have dropped out of the exchange but over the next few
weeks I'm going to attempt to repair that by sending out a brief and such
to various institutions and organisations (not to mention artists that I
know of here and there). So will keep the edition sizes the same for the
moment. If you know anyone that might be interested please invite them to
participate.

Are any of you good with press releases, I'd like to drum up some publicity
for this project, so if you have the silver pen flick me an email.
Otherwise time permitting I'll put digit to key and give it a burl. Haven't
done a press release for a few years but am sure that I'll come up with
something.

I do want to ask how the deadline is looking to all of you? November 15
seems ominously close but having said that, my work will be ready on the
due date if required.

This following is a list of email addresses and names of all the current
participants as you can see some of the addresses have been lost in my big
crash, please could you email me to up date details and then I'll send them
out off list. I'd like to encourage you all to send scans of ideas and
sketches amongst yourselves. Aside form the work this is a nice opportunity
to meet people across borders and seas. If you like I'll set up a mail list
server for correspondences so that we can share ideas and thoughts more
easily. Please let me know how you feel about that?

John,
I agree, I have my first hand roller, 8x2 1/2" from Graphic and it is going strong after 20 years. It is pretty heavy as has a cast metal handle, but maybe I am just getting old and it weights more than it used to.....it is still perfectly flat all over and rolls out perfectly. The rubber is in great shape. Hard to fool with success. I think I paid about $35 for it and it was a lot of money at the time...but lets see, that is less than $2 a year. Guess I got my money's worth!

Of course you have to take care of it and clean it every day you use it...never leave a roller overnight with ink on it. I think they can be reground for a reasonable charge if you ruin one, although it might take off a 1/32 of an inch in diameter. Takach rollers are lighter in weight but Graphic rollers have way more rubber on them. Sort of a trade off. You can regrind the Graphic rollers many times before you would have to replace the rubber on them. Actually I think it is urethane, not rubber, but I am not positive about this. Dean...give us the answer here! At any rate I highly recommend them. You can get a lighter weight one but not a better one. I have all kinds and these have held up amazingly well! I also have two 14" X 4 1/2" dia rollers from Graphic (one soft and one hard) that are nearly 20 years old...they are also perfect after years and years of use. I did leave oil based ink on the harder one and got it off eventually with oven cleaner (the spray kind)...it was a huge
lesson and I never made that mistake again. It was truly a nasty learning experience. Never, never be too tired to clean the rollers well, even if you think you are coming back to the studio as you never know what life holds in store.....take a lesson! It is way easier to clean it now than to fight to clean it later.
