Dear Printmaker:
As a fellow printmaker, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce
myself. I have co-authored the book "Printmaking in the Sun" with Pauline Muir
and have developed the Solarplate printmaking technique. The experiences I
gained from being a Master Printmaker, working with de Kooning, Johns,
Motherwell, Fischl, Flavin and many others, has presented me with unique problem
solving situations and challenges. Having made prints throughout the United States
and over a dozen countries I have picked up a few short cuts.
It is with great pleasure that I announce the future publication of a new
book entitled "Printmaking: Tricks of the Trade." The book will be packed with
interesting ideas, formulas, inventions and innovations designed and developed
by printmakers. It will include techniques, tools, gadgets and many, many
shortcuts, all fully illustrated with diagrams, photographs and original artwork.
Printmakers, especially those who teach and work with others, have a
reputation for sharing their methods and materials. With this in mind I wish to
invite printmakers to submit their original ideas for inclusion in "Printmaking:
Tricks of the Trade." If you wish to submit an idea, please email me. I shall
consider all submissions sent to me before October 30th. If the idea sounds
viable, I shall write you back and request that you include documentation,
description and/or photographs. Original ideas will be given credit, and when
approved for the book, I shall request examples of your art work illustrating your
idea.
Ideas may consist of one or a combination of the following:
A brief written description
A drawing or sketch
A photograph
The book should be ready within the year and will be published by Printaganza
(a nonprofit international educational and research institute).
This book will be a valuable resource for teachers, experienced printmakers
and students. If you are interested in the possible opportunity to be included

I do not know if this is cause for concern. I received a message that
stated my mail was undeliverable. The message stated that I had sent
something to Mike Lyon, I have not sent him an email in some while now and
none that I can remember with an attachment. I am not sure what this might
mean??? Perhaps a new method for spreading a virus. So be careful out
there and be sure your virus protection software is up to date.

What difference does it make? I would love to have my work published in anyone' s book. That high would sure be royalty enough for me. What was is Shakespear said "buying and spending we lay waste our power" I know that is not exact but you get the idea! What if everyone who donates so much time to baren expected "royalties?" This whole thing site and list would just go away. I know Dan and don't think he is getting rich teaching printmaking and don't know of anyone else who is either. Think the book is self published and know he had to committ to buying 1000 copies of the first one.....I am sure he still has quite a few, a fact of life.
On another note I just got my computer debugged and found I had a ton of spyware on it even though I have a firewall. Those darn virus writers are so clever they are getting past it by making it tiny and attaching to stuff you want. Rats. My computer works just great today...best $89 I have spent in a long time.

Check your local regulations ... anyone can set up a "non-profit" society
very easily. That society can own print making equipment and materials ...
that society can pay for directors and officers to travel to further the
aims of the society ... and so on.
Soooo, make YOUR studio into a non-profit society. Lay out the aims as
education and research into printmaking. Then invite all your friends to
contribute to a book which your society will publish, with the funds going
back to the society to support your studio and your travel. Solicit
donations, sell art cards, do demonstrations for a fee ... the funds
derived go back into the society tax-free. Those funds may then buy you new
equipment and supplies or pay for you to travel to conferences or Baren
get-togethers ...
Many small music groups do essentially that ... form a non-profit society
and then perform for a fee. The fees buy musical instruments for the
members, go to pay travel expenses, pay for the cost of cutting a CD ...
then the CDs are sold at performances, and the returns go back to the
society for more of the same.
This is a standard scam for wanabe poets. There are lots of closet poets
out there who would love to see their work in print. So, along comes
someone offering them the chance to do just that. Simply contribute your
work and agree to buy a certain number of copies of the book, and voila. Of
course the "organizer" takes a big rake-off for all the time and trouble
organizing the thing.
If you are desperate to see your work "in print", then band together with a
bunch of like-mined people and do the standard vanity press routine ...
self-publish, each of you agreeing to buy a certain number of the
resulting book.
I am not saying Dan is operating a scam ... I certainly do not mean to cast
aspersions on his character. But it might be worth checking out where the
money is going. Instead of donating your ideas, would you donate money?
What's the difference? My only point is, it seems the contributors
themselves should be getting SOME reward for their contributions ... maybe
a flat fee, maybe a royalty, maybe free copies of the book. After all, Dan
will be selling YOUR ideas.
The difference between Dan's project and Baren and other on-line groups is
that we share our ideas freely with each other ... we do not collect other
folks ideas and then try to sell them for our own benefit.
If your work and/or ideas are that good, there are a number of art
magazines that publish regularly that accept submissions ... and most of
them pay.

"Baren-It All"...is a five year compilation of printmaking tips & ideas
freely exchanged ( and hopefully on public domain) that I researched from
the Baren forum archives....lots of good stuff.....am I in trouble ?

I was just hoping to use any proceeds from the book to be able to travel

profession or career supplying services free.? (That excludes charity)
I signed an agreement to allow my art to be used in a North Light Book, a F&W
Publication. I was more than happy to! You can imagine my surprise when I
saw it published and advertised as the Book of the Month with my work on the
cover, besides being inside. This is a large well-known publishing company and
I never knew it was to be the cover. But I had signed the agreement! No
other permission was needed. Would I have signed the agreement had I known
before? I do not know. I got not a penny for use in a nationally circulated
book. Now I am more aware.
There are starving artists who work years and loving it, but when lucky
exposure comes don't they deserve to be well paid.? Have your friendly family
lawyer look over what you sign.
