Hi all
I have put up the web pages, please have a look at
http://www.vurtmedia.com/exchange.html they are by no means final, I
suspect that we as a group who wish to do this exchange will need to
rewrite sections of it and find a text and intent that we all feel
comfortable with.
I beg the sufferance of the Baron exchange people that they will allow very
occasional posts from me regards this exchange. This exchange is not a part
of Baron but a side issue by interested members of Baron and I will
endeavor to respect the intent that Baron serves which is the dissemination
of artistic technique specifically relating to Japanese woodblock printing
(amongst other things).
I will endeavor to set up a list server for the exchange over the next week
(I have a tight deadline regards an illustration job so it may be a little
while) so that we can bitch about the way the world is going and talk about
our work for the exchange and all that sort of thing.
I hope that you will all contribute. It is a topic that has certainly
sparked a lot of noise.

here and there we get your views as well as the newspaper edited
news... in fact our news is a lot more on the factual side than the
discussion side of you CNN which we can get too on Foxtel...we might be
on the other side of the world but world politics affect our country
too.

I know I do not post very often but I couldn't resist this time.
First I just wanted to say ... Well said John.
I've often heard it said "ignorance of the law is no excuse".
Something else I wanted to comment on is this idea of a political exchange. I for one would probably not care to participate in something designated as such, but...If a person was inclined to want to express political views I think a person could make a statement, political or otherwise, with almost anything being suggested as a theme.
If the theme for an exchange were boats a person could do something on the Exxon Valdez oil spill or on the Americas Cup race or on a bass boat. My point is art is supposed to be about expression and communication of ideas. If a person is politcally active,he/she will find ways to comment on that through their art.
I appreciate Lawrence Finn's efforts and the extended opportunity for people who want to more activley express thier politics but I would like to comment on the following sentence taken from the site that was setup which I understand is a work in pogress.
"I would like to suggest that all the work avoid text aside from the title, as art is primarily about the manipulation of aesthetics. We need to use aesthetics as the tool and not subsume ourselves to the ease of text and the nasty slide that often takes into propaganda. This is only a suggestion."
I know it's only a suggestion but it would seem to me to limit one's use af a particular means of expression (text) is not allowing total freedom of that expression. I for one think text is very aestetic and would not want my use of it limited. I can see where using it can slide into propaganda but isn't that the same thing as saying using the nude as subject matter can slide into pornography? which of course it can but that's why art is in the eye of the beholder and the line between art and "something else" is so fuzzy.
Maybe the thing is that it's so easy to express political ideas through art in America that unless you do some crazy stupid against the law thing you don't get heard or noticed. And everybody want to be heard.

FOUL! FOUL! Where are the Black Boot Political Speech Police when you
need them? There was no mention of woodblock, carving, or printmaking
of any kind. POLITICAL, POLITICAL - AAAACK! And, it was not an
announcement - it was a political point of view. I won't stand for
this encroachment on my own narrow, but firmly held political views.

Just so I don't violate the law - I am really enjoying the powdered
pigments I received from the Baren Mall. I thought I would spend hours
grinding these little devils into submission, but it is nothing. And
the colors - wow! I just don't have enough baby food jars to put them
all in and I'm not getting pregnant just for jars. My daughter in law
is supposed to be getting some for me, but I think she's forgotten.
Guess I'll buy a half dozen jars of applesauce - if I remember
correctly it was not too awful, and I can feed it to my husband. All
heart, aren't I? :-) Anyway, I recommend them to anyone doing hanga -
those watercolor tubes can break the bank.
BTW, three of my rather large hanga prints (31" x 25" framed) sold at
the Print Arts Northwest show last month. I even tried a bokashi on
one of them - it went from blue to burnt sienna. If no one tells me
something is difficult I will dive right in and do it - but mention one
degree of difficulty and that's it - doomed to failure.
I seem to remember Mike Lyon mentioning that he never uses his ball
bearing baren on his hanga prints. Well, not knowing any better I did,
and it worked great. However, I am going to calendar the paper like
David has mentioned for the next batch. I stretched that paper
unmercifully and had a horrid time flattening those prints when I was
done. So this time the paper will go through the etching press a
couple of times before I start printing. I assume that the paper is
dampened and then put it through the press under quite a lot of
pressure - is that correct? David, did you find a press you can use
for that? And, your Beautiful Women print # 1 is exquisite.
