Okay, I am trying to take the guesswork out of which papers will emboss
using Hanga? I Prefer the lowest cost that is acid free, also a white paper
over an off white. I do not live near a supplier so I can not buy up a few
sheets of various papers and try them??? That is why I asked if 90 lb
fabriano will emboss with Hanga? But surely there are other papers that
will do this well.

Patsy,

LOL - you're right - I meant the Calgon "take me away", but the Culligan man looks like he might have a better destination in mind! So much for an accurate memory - it has been years (I won't say how many, but John Furr already knows I'm older than dirt) since I heard that commercial. Thank you for being my translator.

To respond quickly to the watercolor paper question: It won't work very well. Part of it is the texture, but also w/c paper is highly sized, whereas printmaking paper generally has very little. They are different animals for different purposes and to try printing on the one not intended for that purpose is like trying to ride a zebra instead of a horse. It can be done, but is frought with difficulties.

Cheers!

Most printmaking papers will emboss but it will depend on how you treat
them embossing wet or dry and how deeply you want the impression.
David Bull has beautiful finely embossed prints and he would have more
knowledge than I do but there are some points to remember with what
ever paper you choose...

Embossing is best left until all the other colours have been printed
otherwise you could loose your embossing and end up with a white
pattern instead if printing over the same area.
Dampen the paper.... soak it well and drain it well between blotters so
that it is thoroughly dampened, not wet.
Wet the clean cut block so that the paper does not slip while working
on it
Instead of a baren you may need a wad of soft cotton or even an elbow!
or a "dabber dabber do"!

With the style of embossing you may need to do a few practise pieces
with different papers to see which one suits your design and your
working methods.

You should rerun your Bootcamp print in different colours... even with
brighter pink petals, or yellow ones.... the colour change may make the
difference to your liking it.

Good luck.

Yes you can, Marilynn! A great way to try many different papers is to
order a "sampler" from your favorite supplier. I know Graphic Chemical
and Daniel Smith both have darned good values on their full-sheet
printmaking sampler packs and Japanese sampler pack (DS). I think
McClains also has a sampler pack.

Hi -
I think I missed Harry's letter re Japanese paper supplies in the UK-
But have you (Harry) visited Falkoners (it may be spelled with a c)
located on Southampton Rd in London (oppostite the Central School
of Art,etc) who have a good supply and not all expensive (I bought
some great papers there last summer) -they are now being supplied
by Nancy Jacobi (of Japanese Paper Place fame here in TO) who
regularly visits papermakers in Japan The JPP also does mail order
(catalogue is online at www.Japanesepaperplace.com) if anyone's
interested with obviously good prices for the $US but I imagine most
of the bareners know this - it's always fun and enlightening to experiment
with new and different papers

Marilyn...

I've done a lot of embossing, all of it with linoleum. Maria is right.
Daniel Smith sells sampler packs of their offerings of printmaking paper. I
actually embossed all of the sample pieces, both wet and dry (a press is the
only way to go on that). Any time I want to try another paper, I just pull
out my package of embossed papers. I did it years ago, and it is still
useful as a reference.

Would you believe I've been... "busy" ?? -- but never fear --
everything is in order and the correct list will go up soon! How about
giving me, like, five minutes?

LOL,

Mike

I poked my head into the 'Little Gallery' at Harper as they were
hanging the Small Works Show, and across the room I saw one of
Tyrus Clutter's prints! It was like seeing a friend's face!
Congratulations, Tyrus!

Have any other Baren folks made it into this show? The Small
Works Show at Harper College was preceeded by one of the GREAT
National print shows, and the print collection at the college is
extraordinary!

If you have 'Prints On Exhibit' in the next couple of months
please let us include your information in the upcoming quarterly
issue of Baren Suji?

Do you know of upcoming print shows at local galleries, museums
or universities?

Let me know quickly, off list please.

Thanks!
Sharen
