Janet, your complete message was in the "old digest" (the last paragraph
of the quote was missing in the new). Those who would like to read the
rest of her message, just go to the Baren Archives, #2536 for Wednesday
and the rest of the quote about Munakata is there.

About the shunga exchange that John is coordinating:

I notice that about 5 names of people who originally signed up for the
Shunga Exchange did not meet the deadline and those are the names of people I did
not recognize as active Baren members. I had the feeling we were being used
by people who want to take advantage of Baren, and get themselves on the
list for whatever purposes? you can imagine.

By doing so active members did not have the opportunity to participate and
had to be on the waiting list.

I do think we can prevent this from happening in the future.

Hi Marilyn,
Not for me to define. It's in the guidelines.

The names I refer to have never been seen by me to have been involved in
e-mail conversations or anything Baren. I may be mistaken .

They kept some Bareners from participating.

I got this gut feeling when I saw those 4 or 5 names and now I can't help but
respond (2 cents!)

Thank you very much for getting them to me at or near the deadline.
If your name is not on this list and your prints are in the mail, please
e-mail me. And if your prints are not in the mail but are printed, please e-mail
me what their status is.

I have to know if any of you do not expect to get the prints to me by feb.
28th so i can ask those who are still on the wait list if they would like to be
in this exchange and i need that info as soon as possible. I am trying to
keep everyone in mind but some e-mail may have been lost, etc.
Remember that it is only fair to follow the rules, and if you can't get prints in,
please review the exchange rules.

Hello members,

Your newsletter Baren-Suji should be on your desktop by now. If you know
you are subscribed and you did not receive the newsletter or the
announcement from newsletter_editor@barenforum.org, this probably means
that your server refused the mailing.
I have so far received around 18 mail-returned/no such address/etc.
notices, most from AOL or Earthlink. Those subscribers that have AOL or
Earthlink addresses will have to add the above address and my address
(maria@mariarango.com) to their "friends" or "accept mail from" or
similar. Otherwise you will not get the newsletters.
Please be advised as well that this is a rather large file, around 78KB,
in HTML format. If you are unable to receive large HTML files, you will
also not get the newsletter.

So! In summary, if you are subscribed and did not receive the newsletter
today, please check to make sure you can receive it. Alternatively, you
can unsubscribe from the standard HTML version and subscribe to the
notify-only version.

If all this sounds like Greek to you, don't worry about it. Go here to
read the newsletter:
http://barenforum.org/newsletter/issue11/issue11.html

And go here to sub or change your subscription:
http://barenforum.org/newsletter/newsletter_sign-up.php

And go to your kitchen to make dinner; that's where I'm heading...

Subject: [Baren 24115] Active Bareners
Send Message: To this poster

I do not believe there is a minimum number of mandatory posts required to be an "active" member of Baren. I do consider myself a legitimate member of Baren. However, I don't post very frequently, I have participated in only a couple of exchanges, I don't post information about my education or work, nor do I post details about my private life. By some standards, I would probably be considered a "sub-active" member.
I certainly am not criticizing anyone else's posting style or content of posts. I really enjoy the different Baren voices, and I open my email multiple times a day with the pleasure of knowing that I will be able to read, and enjoy, posts from my fellow bareners. My point is that each barener has a different philosophy on posting and a different style of written communication.
If there is a concern that many bareners are lurkers, then gently encouraging lurkers to start making posts might be be a good thing to do. From one point of view, it would be very easy for a lurker to believe that Baren is really a selective online party composed of a small group of individuals who all know each other, who post multiple times a day, and who willingly share personal details. Again, I am not criticizing--I enjoy reading posts rooted in private life and think that forcing bareners to unilaterally restrict all such posts to "After Five" would make the Baren listserve experience less rich. Having read and participated in other online bulletin boards and listserves, I believe that all such electronic communication forums have participants who post extensively and participants who post occasionally. My point is that the Baren listserve should be for as much for people who post infrequently and maintain personal privacy as it is for Bareners who create a more outgoing online presence.

Subject: [Baren 24117] e-bay
Send Message: To this poster

I hesitated to write this, because I know that keeping to topic is
important to baren. But I checked our archives, and there are 135
references to e-bay, so I feel a bit less sheepish about sending this
warning, and it is perhaps important to our members to know of the dangers
when buying or selling on e-bay.

This past week-end my wife received a notice from e-bay asking her to
confirm a change to her account. She had never made a change and it turns
out that someone has stolen her e-bay identity and changed the email
address attached to it, so that it's impossible for her to reclaim the
identity, which is done through email. A quick check showed that the
identity thief is using her account to bid on high priced computer
equipment. She herself always bought small items. Both buyers and
sellers are rated by one another on e-bay, and we assume that one reason
the thief chose my wife's identity is that she has excellent ratings as a
buyer.

What is particularly disturbing is that e-bay seems not to care--they still
have not responded to our inquiries, after 5 days. We ourselves wrote to
the seller of the computer equipment to warn him of the potential
fraud. Finally, we couldn't recall if my wife had registered a credit card
with e-bay, so we ended up having to cancel our credit cards.
