Marilynn (mom),

The problem is the camera meters for 18% grey. The meter assumes a balance of 
tones thoughout the image that average out to 18% grey. This works for most 
subjects, but snowy days or other large areas of white will try to meter as 
grey. Likewise large areas of black will look washed out and grey.

You need to override the camera's exposure meter/ Many better cameras have 
exposure compensation settings. See if yours does. If so try +1 stop of exposure 
to compensate. Test. See if you need to use more compensation, go up from 
there till the image looks correct.

If you dont have compensation, then see if you have an exposure lock button 
on your camera. Most do, or work the same way by keeping the shutter button 
pressed halfway. If so, then get what is called an 18% grey card. Hold it in 
front of the camera, take the exposure off of the card, then while keeping the 
button pressed halfway have someone remove the grey card and then take the 
picture.

I hope that is clear enough, if not let me know and I will try to explain 
more. Basically it is how they make camera exposure systems that is causing you 
'problem'.

A Maru-bake 60 mm that I bought from the mall is cracking and I wonder if
that's normal or bound to happen, if I'm doing something wrong, and what its
life expectancy is from here on out.

After washing out all of the paint and drying it as completely as I can, I
allow it to stand on its bristles to finish drying.   Any suggestions or
comments?

If you head over to the Archives, and look up Digest #498 and the few 
that followed, you will find a thread that discussed brush care and 
splitting, etc.

I am sure there have been other discussions, but that's the first one 
that came to hand with a quick Google search ...

Bette,

Lay it on it's side or hang it by putting a small eye hook into one end
to dry, don't stand on the bristles. Brushes do split occasionally. You
will see them wrapped with wire or twine or stapled. Then some epoxy or
non watersoluble glue over the twine. This keeps them from cracking
more. Do not pull hairs out, cut them off if one gets longger than the
rest. If you pull them out the whole bunch can come out as they are just
stuck in and held with glue. Dave may have a better answer for this than
I do. I have one that cracked about 1/4 inch and never got any worse so
I just ignore it.
