Baren Digest Tuesday, 12 August 2003 Volume 24 : Number 2339 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: ArtfulCarol#aol.com Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2003 11:14:33 EDT Subject: [Baren 22546] Re: Baren Digest V24 #2338 Dimitris, your idea about the "what" and "why" we make our prints is well made Responding to another point you expressed: "But you know they had firemen in Yugoslavia too... Or do we care about our own only?" One of the most worthwhile projects I was ever involved in was John Center's idea. Because I was able to do it, I organized the first "NYC 911 Firemen's Exhibit" , the woodblock prints of 22 Baren members, in Irvington, NY and then arranged for the whole portfolio to be acquired by Roberta Waddell for the NYC 42St. Library Print Collection, where it belonged. Therefore, my priorities and practical efforts are first for my "own" in my country. Then, when I have more contacts my efforts will be more international. I think that answers your "why" question. I checked out the Graphic Chemicals site and found many items I have been looking for (including reasonably priced papers). One major plus was ink in cartridges. Cans are too messy. Over the weekend I printed three blocks of an eight block print. The third block printed a bit glossy (I put quite a bit of Daniel Smith transparent medium in it). I ordered the Dullit which purports to be a matting compound and promises to take the shine out. We'll see how it goes. ------------------------------ From: Mike Lyon Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2003 13:01:27 -0500 Subject: [Baren 22548] WEB CAM IS BACK ON Hi all... My current print has another state available for viewing... I think the condition after block #14 was the most 'artistic' and it's been somewhat downhill from there... The additional detail may actually have detracted a bit from what I thought were very beautiful and very undefined chiaroscuro shadows -- now it may be a bit too deep. I'm going to go ahead and carve and print a final (well, maybe two more... we'll see) layer right now. My web cam is turned on and I 'think' it's working -- at least it works here in the studio... So you can see me sweat for the next couple of hours. Let me know if you have any problems viewing (what a cool toy)! You can see the print progress at http://www.mlyon.com/temp/2003_08.htm -- that page is supposed to pop-up inside my web-site's frameset and if all goes well, you can select "STUDIO WEB CAM" from the menu at the left -- otherwise, you may be able to get the webcam all by itself (without the rest of my site) at http://lyonstudio.inetcam.com - -- Mike Mike Lyon mailto:mikelyon#mlyon.com http://www.mlyon.com ------------------------------ From: Cucamongie#aol.com Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2003 20:00:33 -0400 Subject: [Baren 22549] thanks Thanks everyone for the nice words, and Colleen, I look forward to your visit also - though I have to warn you, my place is a cluttered swirl of activity! The piece that Carol mentioned, "Little Jazz", is on my website if anyone wants to take a look http://www.sarahhauser.womanmade.net/gallery It was originally a sumi painting around 6" x 4" or so but I blew it up to about 24 inches high, something like that. The outline block was printed, then I shaded it with big brushes and sumi ink. happy printing!
