Barbara (Patera) if you have a look at the site and go to the prints of  
Paul Jacoulet he is the same person that Printed those woodblocks we  
saw owned by the lady we met in the Chinese Restaurant in Seattle!!!   
It gives his biography and all.  The prints here are more simplified  
than the ones we saw but you can see he is the same person!

What a find that was!

Hi Jan,

Yes, Jacoulet was the artist. Have been trying to contact the lady and give her 
the web address..... she is currently on a cruise. She would love to have the 
information. It is the first site I've been to that will give you a price on 
his prints, and I'm sure she wanted to know that.

His prints are wonderful.
I saw "something" of Gauguin in his work.

I personally can't agree.  I know that a lot of people on this list are 
taken with Jacoulet.  But, however well-made, they seem to me to be 
decorative, often sentimental, and "decadent', in the sense that they 
prettify a culture and tradition of which they are not an authentic 
expression. By contrast, Gauguin's are technically cruder but at his best 
powerful and mysterious; in his prints, the one or two colors, hand-applied 
in the ones I've seen, often appear to glow against the encompassing 
blacks.  I love Gauguin's prints but am not at all attracted to Jacoulet's.

Except in very few cases I find impressionist art to be over hyped and in 
some of the prints to be badly done.  If the art institute wants to sell tickets 
to the masses they do a show on any impressionist artist.  Many of the prints 
were so poorly printed as to be laughable. If they were turned in to an intro 
to printmaking class I would return some of them with corrections noted.     
Thomas Eakins towers over them all.

>From Paul Jacoulet you can learn craftsmanship at least even if you don't 
care for his subjects.  In the same way you can learn from Albrect Durer I am not 
interested in much of his subject but I stand in awe for his craftsmanship.
