In, I think, Waldo's autobiography he describes making a baren in the mid 1920s. Goods arrived from the orient wrapped in bundles and bales of "Chinese sea-grass matting." He whittled a block of wood "into a shape to fit the hand, like a disk." The drawing shows a somewhat wide disk with a round flat knob rising in the center from its base. He then fastened a piece of matting over the disk after padding it underneath. He "braided it down securely and there is the printing baren." It sounds very crude but the work created is lovely. Been on the mighty Columbia river navigating a 34' trawler to the coast. I am extra tired after sleeping on a floor mat and than in a V-berth, but happily healthy. What an amazing experience the summit was. There are too many to thank so big hugs to everyone who helped me and walked me through hanga frustation, gave me rides and just made me laugh. Mike Lyon how special you are, so kind and always smiling with a hearty welcome, thank you so much for sharing that big buiding with the gorgeous floors and a big space with all of us. I have to share a first impression, David Bull. When he walked into the room I was very awe struck. He walks with a special aura, a man with a purpose, a man with a caring heart, a man who shares all with everyone who is willing to learn. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with such kindness. The beauty of this wonderful group of wood block artists is that they were willing, each and every one to share, inspire and just plain care. We slept together, ate together, shared a shower for a week and walked away feeling like one big family. (yes there were some in hotels but they missed the 1 am look at julios books and I think even more, I loved waking up to this group every morning for a week!) Now I can say I am a convert and more hanga prints will be coming!!! I really really learned!!! Please make the next summit one I can attend, the goal is to go to every one! A word about you oily ones, I love oil too. But you can not take oil pigments on an airplane! But please keep carving and sharing I love every print I have from this group of artists. Congratuloations for the success of your summit. ------------------------------ From: "Carole Baker" Date: Wed, 2 Jul 2003 12:46:42 +0900 (JST) Subject: [Baren 22045] Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2003 Hi all, I finally got home Sunday night after a week in Florida after the summit. Finally my mind at rest to dwell on thoughts of that wonderful week and feeling such gratitude for all of you that made it possible. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Some thoughts on the water and oil mix of Baren. I am really only interested in hanga, and pretty much ignore the oily technical things when they come up on the forum. But I love much of the the imagery, cherish the oil based exchange prints, and enjoy the non-technique discussion from the oily group on the forum. So it is good to know that nothing really is going to change. But when I read the digests last week, I'm remembering (perhaps wrongly) that the discussion to keep the emphasis of Baren on moku hanga came up after someone suggested having an all-oil gathering. I hope that Baren would not discourage such a gathering as the summit for those members of Baren just interested in oil based printing (assuming some oil loving persons would want to take on the task of organizing it) and that Baren might even facilitate it to some extent on the site (sign up, info area). One more thing: Dave sent these links to the forum a few months ago about his friend Mr Hishiki who started making prints at the age of 60 and is now 73. I was talking to someone at the summit about them and said i'd saved the links and would send them. But now I can't remember who it was I was suppose to send them too(maybe cause I'm 60 going on 73) , so here they are again for everyone and well worth another look: The text isn't readable. > Some prints he made for entering in group exhibitions: > http://members.jcom.home.ne.jp/hishiki-k/koubo/ > > Calendar: > http://members.jcom.home.ne.jp/hishiki-k/cal10/ Carole Baker Gustavus, Alaska ------------------------------ From: "marilynn smih" Date: Tue, 01 Jul 2003 21:15:18 -0700 Subject: [Baren 22046] Re: Baren Digest V23 #2274 I will send my little flower for a summit exchange, but it is for the playing card exchange. I could reprint it in another color on different paper to make it unique for those who will already have one. I too am primarily a oil printer, and greatly enjoy and learn from discussions including oil printing as well as hanga. I think Baren is a wonderful forum and greatly appreciate everyone's participation. Is it okay to vignette a larger block down to the surface dimensions (perimeter of image) or can we go smaller to a ready-made 2 x 3? Cutting blocks is another one of those things I just don't do well. ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^ Michelle Morrell jmmorrell#gci.net MichelleMorrell.com ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^ ------------------------------ From: Mike Lyon Date: Wed, 02 Jul 2003 06:57:28 -0500 Subject: [Baren 22049] Re: Exchange #18 (small) SIGN-UP Complete description of #18 is on-line in the sign-up page at http://barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_sign-up.html and also in the exchange information page at http://barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_18/exchange_18.html - -- Mike At 12:07 AM 7/2/2003 -0300, you wrote: >Mike, >I didn't understand quite well the dimensions of exchange 18 the Paper >dimension is the same as exchange 16th..ok? 25,5 x 19 cm...
