Subject: [Baren 22007] classes 

I am looking for folks to sign up for a class, if I don't get enough
students it won't run! It's a woodcut class with the papermaker Mary Leto at
Dieu Donne July 19, 26 and 27. If you know anyone who might be interested
you can e-mail Stacey. It has been interesting preparing with Mary, as she
knows a lot about paper and we will hand make paper for printing. I think
her handmade paper will require a delicate touch. Printing on it has made me
think about how one might print differently on delicate papers.

For my .02 cents worth...I totally agree with these two statements 
above...perhaps there's been a slight misunderstanding about  all this 
oily & water discussion.......the barenforum discussion list and exchanges will remain open to ALL 
forms of relief printmaking with of course concentration on woodcuts, 
linoleum and wood engraving as we always have. What was discussed in KC was that the website/encyclopedia would mostly 
continue to focus (as it always has !) and be a repository for the 
traditional moku-hanga techniques. 

So everybody can relax...there are really no major changes planned. 
Business & fun...as usual !

Just a note for those interested in Tom Killion - He has moved his home and 
studio to Inverness Park in Marin County north of San Francisco. There are 
still plenty of woodcut artists left around Santa Cruz, tho.

I just wanted to change my support for a future summit from Toronto to 
Chicago... in case anyone was taking notes... 

Chicago has two members who can help organize the event, plus having driven 
thru there taking John Center home I saw some wonderful places that I would 
love the opportunity to investigate further.

I agree with April that such an event should include cultural opportunities 
that people do not have in their own home regions. Chicago has such 
opportunities aplenty, and a print center to meet at. I am sure they also have less 
expensive accommodations if people need. The city certainly has just about any 
variety of restaurant a person could desire.

No offense to our members from Winnipeg, but I have been there many times and 
it is a quaint little town, nice quiet place to visit but it isn't a major 
metropolitan area and lacks the amenities of such a city. It has nothing to do 
with the fact I view Toronto as the New York of Canada. That isn't the case. I 
am a very practical person and as such I looked at what places had they best 
offerings for a summit..... The same could be said for many other centers in 
North America, they are nice, but do they meet every need? It is also VERY 
expensive to fly into Winnipeg from most places, it is less expensive to fly from 
Toronto to Vancouver than to winnipeg which is half the distance.... last I 
flew that way anyway.

Can you tell I want to have another summit soon? LOL.

Welcome to new members...Renee and all others..

Maria congratulations on your Valley of Fire exhibit !!!!! Your 
"Timberline Traveler" print from exchange #14 is getting lots of attention 
at the Skokie exhibit...everyone wants to know how you did all that fine 
"white" detail....it's
 a fabulous print.

April, good luck with your classes, your work spreading moku-hanga to 
printmakers all over is a blessing for our cause. Remember...Sharen,  John 
and I would like you to come to Chicago to teach a class, possibly at 
Harper College in Palatine. 

Hi Ray,  I loved your presentation in KC, your work always draws high 
praise when I show off our exchange prints. You are so right about the 
atmosphere at the summit.... oil, water, beginners, professionals, 
baren-users, press-aficionados...all working together and sharing 
information...total tolerance & respect for each others chosen techniques 
and work....... 

Now that I had a chance to catch-up on my sleep and think a bit about KC, 
I think it was a tremendous learning experience for me. I went there with 
five goals in mind....meet everyone and get to know bareners,  have my 
carvings tools brought back from the dead, learn how to cover a baren 
properly, watch David and the others print moku-hanga and see the Spencer 
exhibit in Lawrence.  All goals accomplished in the very short three days 
I was there... happy to report. 

 A few observations....most of us don't seem to use the baren properly, by 
that I mean the proper weight distribution and arm to body angle....some 
of us were printing while sitting down at a table {;-(  ....I gues 
whatever works is okay but it was good to see David, April, Marco and 
other seasoned practitioners and how they shifted their body slightly 
forward and focus the weight down the arm...the baren becoming one with 
the body.  Also the difference type of pressures used for different jobs ( 
remember the slight baren pressure David used to apply the glue to the 
paper/block during the metal/mica demo ?). 

Another thing that I noticed is that while I am used to splashing a bunch 
of small dabs of color all over the block...David would usually only dab 
one, two or at most three  swabs of color (usually in some central 
location) and then he would let the brush do it's job of moving the 
pigment all around the block.... this is of course key...proper brush 
saturation is a must for proper technique.  David's colors/pigment  looked 
very pasty, thick and rich...unlike the water down, runny stuff that 
normally ends up on my prints {;-(

I wish I had thought of doing little 10 second video clips/intros of 
everyone in attendance...like April was doing with her digital 
camera....it would have been an awesome record of our get together....but 
the energy and good karma experienced in KC will surely translate to our 
future work....

Well, it took a bit of work and effort during the last three days but our 
prints are now up on exhibit at the Skokie Public Library. Show will run 
for about eight weeks I think.  It went up just in time to celebrate the 
library's "reopening" after a two year major remodeling. The big party was 
today and approximately 3-4000 people came thru the doors.....and saw our 
prints !!!!

I have selected for this show a mix of prints from Hanga-only exchanges 
#15 ( 18 prints), exchange #16 (18 prints), Music exchange #13 (12 prints) 
and selected other works covering the range of exchanges #10-16 and LPE I. 
Also featured is one of our own members with a solo mini-exhibit of his 
work... Mike Lyon ..with six prints from his last series of color 
reduction woodcuts. In total approximately 55-60 prints representing about 
45-50 of our members...

Also ongoing is the show at the Spencer Museum in Lawrence, 
Kansas..."Inspired by Japan"...barenforum members rock !

Hi All,

If anyone is interestead, I have several photos of the participants from
the summit that I am willing to share.  Most of my photos are portirate
types.  I like to be able to see the face at least one time clearly and
then I do other angles.  I don't have a web site so I can either send them
to your personal email, or if someone has room, I can send them to someone
with a web site.  

Sorry to be so late in my offer, but after the gathering I worked for four
days, then drove to Oklahoma City for my grandsons wedding.  I think I am
finally ready to spend a day or two at home.  Don't worry, that won't last
long and I will be ready to go again.

Subject: [Baren 22016] Exchange 18 

Hi folks,

Don't know if anyone noticed, but the Exchange 18 sign up is
supposed to begin tomorrow, July 1st.

We had discussed doing a very small exchange (that is, the paper/image)
being small (for example an image of 3" x 3" on paper  6" x 8" or some
such thing).

Anything further on this front?  I'm certainly interested in a "small"
exchange.
