It's a fun way to travel! You get to see all the scenery without worrying about the traffic. And, I agree it is challenging traveling with your art supplies on a train, not to mention the buses you will be taking, too. I had a huge flat zippered thing for paper and art supplies, but it was awkward along with my backpack, plus my drag-along suitcase on wheels. At one stop the train did one of those notorious jerks just before opening the doors. I had been standing, waiting to disembark and fell over backward (could have been the weight of the backpack that caused me to lose my balance) with that danged zippered thing of art supplies right on top of me. Since I wasn't hurt (this time actually saved by that fully packed backpack), but just dazed for a minute, I can say it probably looked pretty funny. We were traveling for a month (en route to Boot Camp) so that's why all the stuff I was carrying. The main problem with traveling a month is you tend to buy some things along the way, and that adds to the bulk and imbalance. >On the summit I am wondering if certain things will be avabile as I am >traveling by public transportation and can carry only so much. Had a BALL! There were so many high points, but two which are related to woodblock printmaking are: First, my Dad and I took a day train to Ome in order to visit the founder of BarenForum... David Bull. Dave was just a wonderful host to us and we had the best time! I wrote a little about our day in "Events and Activities" which you can find here: http://www.barenforum.org/activities/activity_frame.html -- it's the link near the top left, "Mike Lyon visits BarenForum founder, David Bull" Later, we spent a few days in Kyoto. While shopping for ukiyo-e prints, I inadvertently sold two of my own ($300 each if you're curious) to a beautiful gallery there (having taken some prints with me on Dave Bull's advice) and I have been offered a show there -- catalog and everything! That was both exciting and reassuring. Watch for me in 2004! Many of you own the two prints sold in Kyoto because they were in exchanges 14 and 14a. To Dave Bull: Looking forward to seeing youat Kansas City. Since I am printing this weekend and looking at what you have on the Baren website for printing a Bokashi, I am wondering when doing a Bokashi, why do you use a piece of cloth clipped on a block to moistenthe wood rather than another brush to perform this task? Does it make much of a difference? I don't seem to have a problem with layers of ink taking too long to dry - the climate here in Queensland Australia seems to be good drying weather. I like the break of a few days (more like a week or so) in between printing sessions anyway - other things to be done. Thanks for the tip on "dull it" - not heard of that one.
