I finally got to meet live Baren people (well, some of them were sorta live, but that's another story). Julio looked exactly as I imagined him, Sharon not a bit like I imagined and John, well, John looks like his 2003 "Old Goat" card. We had lots of fun visiting, looking at each others prints and the folio for #15. It was a hoot! I highly recommend, if you are out of town, looking up any Baren folks in the area for a visit. My time was well spent. Oh well, I sent pictures to Julio, let's see how long it takes for him to post them in the Events section! Daniel L. But as I read all these comments about greif and pain in the world and politics I wonder where is the love? where is the hope? Have we lost sight of caring and giving and helping? Why not a positive theme in a world that has so much negative? What about themes like hope, love, giving or helping. Our firemans benefit prints were and are a strong reflection of an historic event, a positive reflection. I greive more for the loss of some of the wonder and beauty of the world than for all this war stuff. We are slowly destroying our enviroment. Perhaps we should focus on showing something we want to keep in our world, something we are loosing rather than suffering of the human kind. A trip to go snorkeling to view the wonders of the sea will make one want to keep the world special. to keep the turtle, the whale, the wild undergrowth of land and sea. Now that leads me to a thought, how about the wonders of the sea or endangered species for a theme? What a great print that is !!!! Durer's "The Four Horsemen of Apocalypse". I just had a close real encounter of the personal kind with this print. Have you ever closed your eyes and watched the whole history of printmaking flash before your eyes ? I had such an experience last week....but my eyes were not closed, but rather wide open. I got invited to go down to the Chicago Arts Institute Prints-Room for a private lecture-walkthru. A friend's printmaking teacher is an AIC graduate and took the class down for a private "show", I tagged along...and what a show it was ! Imagine entering a room an having out on display for you thirty or so prints....works by Durer(5), Kollwitz, Masereel, Eichenberg, Baskin, Munch, Gaugin, Lichtenstein, Frankenthaler...etc.... the real McCoys !!! No glass, no frames...just the prints.....now imagine having your nose inches away ! Careful....don't let that drooling touch the prints ! What a treat !!!! The five Durer prints, Munch's Kiss, Eichenber's print of a military escort and Kollwitz woodcut print of a funeral were magnificent. Perhaps is the naure of out times, but could not help but notice that many of the prints on display for us spoke of man's enduring grief and suffering. The small group of about eight of us were only allowed about an hour and a half with these treasures but what an hour and a half it was ! Just so you don't think I am turning a new leaf here....aftewards, we did sneak down to the main Oriental room to see an exhibit of 30+ Hiroshige's prints (moku hanga) from the Clarence Buckingham collection. thanks....Julio Rodriguez ------------------------------ From: Barbara Mason Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2003 13:58:39 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Baren 21109] Art Institute of Chicago Julio, I envy you your tour of the prints and drawings room. In 1991, the year before the Gilkey Center opened I had the same pleasure of a private tour while my husband enjoyed the waterfront jazz. They were so kind and gave me all their rules, some of which we used here in Portland for our own center. Marc Pascal was especially kind to show me around....I had toured the museum itself the day before but missed the American Contemporary art as I got so caught up in the woodblock prints. This was long before baren, so maybe I have always been a closet woodblock lover. Marc thought this was time well spent. There is just nothing like seeing the real thing, is there? I was particularly interested in Huntervasser, an Austrian artist in the mid 80-s and found out our museum here had some of his prints. I wrangled an invite to go in and see them, white gloves on in a tiny little closet of a room.....and that was what got me involved with our own center, wanting the whole world to be able to see this incredible work that is so seldom on display. If any of you live close to either of these cities, Chicago or Portland, you can make an appointment to see work of your favorite artists. It is worth all the effort, believe me! No where in the suggestion for the theme of war and peace did I hear even a hint that this would mean a political poster contest. I don't think any of us wants to do that kind of "soviet" style art for the masses. It would seem to me that with a theme as broad based as" war and peace" just about any image would be relevant. Some might choose to do the horrors of war "ala Goya", others might choose do to a peaceful meadow landscape - perhaps what a perfect and peaceful world might look to them. I see plenty of latitude in the theme "war and peace", which may be a political expression to some, and not to others. At any rate, there is no need to get ones feathers fluffed. I discovered several different Japanese papers in my studio, all within the same size range: 21 x 17 inches. I obviously got them many years ago, but under what circumstances I can't remember. (Nothing crooked!-- I just don't remember the how or why. Some time back Mike sent us a list of Japanese paper sizes, which I've kept, but I can't find anything that approximates this size. Is there a name for this paper size, and does it have a particular purpose? There's enough paper there for an interesting project--the size looks like a form waiting for content.  Knowing something about the paper might help push things along. The Japanese also have the long size, so any way you tear it I think you can use it all very well. How nice to find paper you did not know you had. Almost like finding money!
