Thank you all for your comments on Tableau and for your suggestions about 
Japanese papers for oil-based printing.  They have been very helpful.  Of 
course, the problem from up here (Winnipeg) is that many papers are not 
readily available to see and touch.  But from your combined descriptions I 
do have a very good sense of what the paper is like.

I've written to some of the places Barbara suggested I contact, and I've 
asked the University of Manitoba Book  Store about Moriki, and they are 
getting me a sample of what they believe is Moriki from one of their 
suppliers.  (It comes in at $CDN 8.00  per sheet--I had so much of it and 
didn't realize I was sitting on so much money--I could have sold it and 
retired earlier!)

Dan, thanks for the info on marble printing, that print is very nice. I will
try shellac seal and a stiffer ink. I printed some today off a particularly
smooth piece of sandstone and it turned out soft and beautiful. My goal is
to print a background and then print the actual carved stone on top to come
up with a realistic approximation of the original carved stone. Anyhow, just
playin'

Myron, might try getting some sample sheet booklets from several vendors so
you can "chew" on the papers a bit before ordering. I own several little
booklets from diverse vendors and when I really want to try a paper I order
a few full sheets to get a full "taste."

It would indeed, and there is a 'standard' technique available for this 
job, used for taking 'prints' from things like relief-carved monuments, 
etc.

- - use a fairly thinnish paper, or at least one that is fairly 
'stretcheable' when damp

- - place the paper over the stone, spray it as necessary with a mister, 
and gently press it down into the carved areas of the stone, working 
slowly and spraying as necessary.

- - once it is all in place, let it dry

- - using a 'tampo' (dabber), dab the ink of your choice over the face of 
the paper. The areas pressed down into the carved lines will remain 
white.

Might this be suitable for your friend? He could present some pretty 
awesome looking prints to go along with his stones I think!

Hi there
The Chinese use stone to create "prints"

A stone is carved  - usually in reverse, but not necessarily. A piece of
paper ( rice ) is Adhered to the stone and dried. Color - usually black - is
then "pounced" onto the surface of the paper with a very hard ball of soft
leather- about 5 inches in diameter. This will allow the pigment to color
the area that has NOT been carved. The carved area will not receive the
color because the paper has " sunk down below the surface of the stone.  The
" Pouncing " will take a LONG time as very little pigment is used at a time.
When all is completed, the paper is wet and lifted off the stone and Voila -
a print..
