It was probably a cut and paste error. So the file produced two labels for you. There's no need to send it back--again, as I said to Ld, give it to someone who might like to have it. I have been lurking the archive forums for a few weeks, and also explored the site quite extensively. I am very excited about participating. A quick synopis of my relation to woodblock. I have been printing for the last few years in a couple of mediums (relief, intaglio, litho, collagraph), but always finding myself returning to relief work. The relation between the tools and the marks made. I recieved my BFA in printmaking in Des Moines, IA, and am currently working on a MFA in Long Island, NY. Recently, I have been trying to develop a studio practice in my home that involves relief printmaking. I am also fascinated about learning moku hanga and water based inks, and am trying to slowly pick up things here and there. I am hoping of picking up a workshop in NYC, for instance. The other day I was working on a sculpture using MDF fiber board. I tried cutting it with my print chisels and tools and it cut very smoothly and easily. I am working on a print matrix using MDF. My only worry is perhaps it will be too soft to hold under printing. I thought as long as I was introducing myself to the group I would ask if anyone has tried MDF or other fiberboards for printing, and if they had worthwhile results? Excited to be involved. I haven't had any problems. However I am usually an oily person. But MDF seems to hold up quite nicely. And I use an etching press to print. If so, try household ammonia. Let me know if it works, as I have plans to use if for a ground for etching purposes. Cheers ....... It is cheap, and readily available. You can probably even get good sized pieces as scrap from cabinet makers, house renovations, or new home constructions. There are several grades of MDF, some of it a lot harder than others. The higher grade stuff, though harder to carve, holds a very fine line. The great thing about MDF is that there is no grain to worry about. But there will often be minute lines on the surface from the manufacturing process. Just sand well with a palm sander before you begin to carve. After carving, I give the whole thing a coat of sealer ... I have been using one of the urethanes. MDF seems to print well with oil based inks ... clean up with vegetable oil and detergent. I have also used Grumbacher water mixable oil colors because they clean up with water. I always worry about getting oil into the block, so water clean-up is a real plus. I have also covered a block with gum arabic, dried it with a hair dryer, then put standard water color directly on the block with a brush and dried it ... print on dampened paper, and it works just fine, just like doing monoprints. I have not tried using paste and water based inks, though I cannot think of any reason why it would not work as well. I talked to someone who did a workshop and they carved the blocks as for intaglio and then used acrylic paint and a FAST pass through the press with dampened paper. I would worry about the acrylic drying on the block. Let me know how you get on with it. Cheers ....... Charles At 09:20 PM 12/10/02 -0800, you wrote: > I am >working on a print matrix using MDF.
