Okay, the hanga question for the day.  (Hey, I gave you all the weekend
off!)

I need some 'rice' paper to practice on.  While I love the Inomachi that
Daniel Smith has, at $29.99 a sheet, I will go broke before I learn to do
this hanga printing.  On the other hand, I suspect if I use the cheapest
'rice' paper, I will run into troubles there too.  So, I would like specific
recommendations for 'rice' paper that is cheap enough to practice on while
not adding significantly to the list of problems.  And I mean specific -- as
in names so I can say I want 15 sheets of XXXXX paper.

And just because I'm curious -- can you hanga print on kinwashi or do those
long fibers cause problems?

Shireen noted the killings. In Seattle two people died last weekend in a
Western-style shootout (only now they shoot from SUV's, not horses, drive-by
style). It was at a nightclub about ten minute walk from my home, downtown
Seattle. In the aftermath, in less than an hour, the people resumed doing
what they'd been doing--having a good time.

We have those "Conversation Cafes" here, and the Iraq invasion was the
topic. Ninety minutes' talking about how we "feel" and fear was the most
often-heard word. No wonder an artist/woodblock carver feels distracted. Of
course you are right to be distracted.

The positive side is that we have this new medium with which to communicate
and restore community. Baren is a community. I'm with everyone else, that a
simple old tool, in name, became a meaningful part of our daily diet of
media. Most people rely on mass TV, PBS and paper news--all designed to
cultivate fear and isolation for profit, IMHO.

Woodblock printmaking was invented as a medium, same as that which led to
the systematic use of tools to move power in ways that are often destructive
to humanity--a machine run by mechanistic philosophy. Tough balance is
required. A quote from another list I use (The Chronicle of Higher
Education) seems timely:

"Our only hope to survive is to make contact with
other humans. We must learn to tell one individual from another,
make alliances, immediately see on the face of another human
being whether this is friend or foe, kin or stranger."

Baren, even though it's digital, helps me achieve this. Stay safe, friend

Patti, by "rideshare into town," did you mean to the opening at the 
Palos Verdes Art Center on Fri., Dec. 6th, 6-10pm?  The Art Center had 
offered to drive me there, so I'll have to let them know if my plans 
change on that.  Or did you mean rideshare into L.A. to the LACMA?  I'll 
write you off-list with the particulars soon.

It'll be great to attend my own opening for the first time in a long 
while at the PVAC, take in the Munakata exhibition at LACMA, maybe visit 
the beach, and I'm interested in going to the MOCA (Geffen), too...  and 
the joy will be in doing some of it with such esteemed company!  :)  Wow!  
(I spent all yesterday online trying to learn the ropes of the 
mass transit system over there--hee hee!)

I'm so happy to see that we have a little group forming for this outing!

Why don't you go ahead and order the following paper(s) from Woodlike 
Matsumura through the Baren Mall at

#23 (appears near the bottom of the page): $7.60 per sheet "New Hosho" -- 
Very similar to the traditional paper on which Japanese ukiyo-e prints were 
made.  It is quite large -- 970mm x 630mm (about 38" x 25"), made of 100% 
Japanese Mulberry, plate dried, sized and ready for you to dampen and 
print.  I have some of this paper -- it is relatively heavy (12 momme), a 
beautiful and silky-surfaced paper (print on the smooth side)...

For practice, you could cut 12 practice sheets of 9" x 8" out of a single 
one of those sheets... Then try cutting two  ~10" square wood blocks into 
the simple practice designs illustrated at 
http://www.lyonartltd.com/baren/toshi_yoshida_practice.htm -- the idea is 
to print the same dozen sheets over and over on the two blocks using tube 
colors of prepared transparent watercolor and gouache in order to learn 
hanga printing...  You'll get the idea pretty quick this way, I think!

For Exchange #15, (15" x 5"), you'd probably want to cut the sheets into 
three parts 15"x25", 15"x25", and 8"x25" -- use the 8"x25" left-over for 
some other project...  like for the practice sheets above!  :-)   Then cut 
each of the 15"x25" parts into four or five 5" wide parts -- so you'll get 
at least eight sheets (maybe 10) for exchange #15 out of each sheet of #23 
- -- you'll need to print more than the 31 you require for the 
edition...  I'd print 40 to 50 in order to have a safety margin and some 
prints to sell or give away as gifts.

So you'll need five or six sheets for the edition ($38 - $45) -- The Mall 
has a 10 sheet minimum.  If I were you, I'd order 10 sheets of #23, but you 
may be on a tighter budget, so if you are confident that you won't mess up 
during cutting and printing and don't want to order 10 sheets of this 
paper, then you could fill out your order with four or five sheets of paper 
#17 (on the same web page) for $0.95 per 1090mm x 790mm sheet -- I've never 
seen this paper, but it's described as being for practice and 
proofing...  For less than $1 a sheet seems like you can't go too far 
wrong, but since it's 100% wood pulp, it likely isn't acid-free or 
'archival' and will become darker and brittle over the years...

Subject: [Baren 19486] Benefit Portfolio 

Dear Baren group,

A few days ago a package arrived from Tyrus Clutter. This turned out to be 
the 9-11 benefit portfolio, which we at Spencer were all thrilled to see 
first hand. I called Tyrus to confirm my hopes, that the portfolio is to be 
added to the Baren Archive here at the Spencer Art Museum. As I told Tyrus, 
I have already used the response of Baren to the events of 9-11 as an 
example of printmaking as a means of activist reaction to the urgent issues 
of the time. I know I was very moved by the fact that the Baren list turned 
to these events and the idea of a portfolio almost immediately. I have 
saved many of those letters, beginning with Daniel Dew's letter with 
subject "unbelievable."

I know that I have not been very vocal in this discussion, largely as we 
are so swamped with our day to day schedule in the printroom that I rarely 
get through a digest of the baren discussion list. I do want  you all to 
know how much we value housing the archive here, and how much this special 
initiative, the benefit portfolio, will mean to us and to  the long-term 
view of the Baren phenomenon.

Today, the day after the portfolio arrived, a fireman from Topeka walked 
into the printroom to ask about a print of flowers he had found under a 
framed poster he had purchased. After dealing with his print, I brought out 
the portfolio to share with him and he was very moved. He  had volunteered 
to work in New York right away (although it was not clear if he went or 
not). I know that he went home having had a valuable and unexpected 
experience today.

Tomorrow I am off to New York for a few days. Last time I was there it was 
only a month after the disaster -- and so we continue to carry all these 
events and experiences with us....
