I can go to bed now with a smile (especially after finding out through my procrastination that I had missed a great opportunity through Maria's mad project) That'll learn me. Marilynn, I hope my postage money was enough, because, for some reason the package weighted more when I mailed it at last, than when I weighted it for US. postage. Maybe I used too much plastic tapes, or the dollars i enclosed were extremely heavy? I gave you until October 8th because I felt we had a bit later start than the main exchange. so for all who have not finished up and mailed get busy that is just a short time off. According to my dictionay, it also has several 'other' meanings, including my favorite, a square of whale blubber. > but sounds like you are using it > to mean a > hollow > chunk of wood? Not hollow, but close in terms of results. Basically, it's a wedge of wood, like a pie slice, or mathematically, a radial section of length . If you take a tree trunk and split it lengthwise you get two halves. Then if you split each half lengthwise again, you have flitches. By doing this, the wood can air-dry safely because the stresses created by the center pith is eliminated. It's about the only way to get unchecked chunks of hardwood thicker than 4". (Except for very soft wood like basswood, only wood less than 4" thick can be kiln-dried, and with cherry it's more like 3".) Okay okay, I conducted a couple of experiments and confess to cruelty to cherry wood. In any case, the results were a wee bit telling of what might happen to traveling solid wood. The warping was not anything noticeable except with a straightedge (like checking a litho-stone flatness), the wood still printed just fine and even. But since the wood I'm shipping and getting back will presumably undergo severe climate changes, I decided to play it safe. I ordered cherry plywood, 3/4" inch thick. Best I could find. Should be here within the week, about the same time I will have my master drawing completed. All's well.
