Subject: [Baren 19262] Proofing without ink 

One way of 'proofing' without dirtying
the block is, as Ruth Leaf suggested,
to make a graphite rubbing. Habitually as
I carve a block I check the way things
are going by putting a piece of any handy
paper on the block and then rubbing it
with a large stick of 2B graphite. I used
to use newsprint but now find myself using the backside of the copy paper
from my computer's printer, perhaps
unconsciously trying to salve my
conscience by recyling some of those
things I really didn't need to print out.
The detail isn't absolute but it is usually possible to see where things are
going.
I bought 4 of these graphite sticks, about
1/2 X 1 X 3 inches, in 1969. About half of one of them is left so it is
clear that this
method is not only clean but economical.
I can't remember  seeing these big sticks
of graphite around anywhere recently.
The maker's name has long since worn away. Can anyone suggest a supplier?
