Baren Digest Saturday, 14 September 2002 Volume 20 : Number 1957 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Lee and Barbara Mason" Date: Fri, 13 Sep 2002 07:32:47 -0700 Subject: [Baren 19152] exhibits Good morning, or maybe good day, depending on where you are and when you receive this. We think of this as instant but truthfully it sometimes takes a day for these emails to go around the world. I was thinking this morning about what a great list this is and how everyone seems so enthusiastic about exhibiting the exchange portfolios all over the world. When I joined the exchanges, exhibitions were the furthest thing from my mind, I just wanted 29 prints from other printmakers. However, now I admit I sometimes think of them as being exhibited. I don't know if my work is any different, but it keeps me on my toes a bit. When we think of how many exhibits the work of our baren artists have been in, it is pretty amazing. NY, Tokyo, Israel, Oregon, California, Ohio, Florida, Illinois, Idaho,Uganda, Scotland....I probably forgot a few. So pat yourselves on the back "Baren Artists". Dave Bull started an amazing thing here and I am sure once in a while when he stops to think of it he can hardly believe what has become of his small 6 person chat list. 10 behind the scenes people working to keep things smooth on the site and list, the mall for supplies and to earn a small bit on money to pay for the upkeep of the website and possibly pay to help future exhibits, the opportunity to award small prizes to up and coming woodblock artists ( http://www.barenforum.org/awards/ ) The fireman print exhibit is going on as we speak, both in California with Georga Garside and in Nampa, Idaho with Tyrus Clutter. I still have the Oregon exhibit in my van, awaiting unloading at the studio and hopefully a day soon to tediously un frame them all and try to get them all home to their respective folders. This may take till spring.... John Amoss designed an outstanding brochure for the baren, a trifold printed on both front and back. He does this for a living so you can imagine how professional it looks. Printed here in Oregon it is available for distribution if anyone sets up an exhibit. If you just want a few copies for yourself, let me know and I will send them. All in all, this is a pretty amazing thing, this information exchange, this amazing encyclopedia and this round table of interested printmakers from so many countries. I am so pleased to be a part of it. Post to the list folks, your participation is what keeps it going and interesting. I got a mall inquiry wondering if we were still in business....the answer is a resounding YES. I'm delighted to hear of your activity, and I feel that it would be appropriate to donate a portfolio of the prints to a New York Library, where they seem to have a good understanding of printmaking and the care of prints, and where the prints will be kept so close to the homes of so many with losses connected with this tragedy, and for whom the portfolio was designed. I'm also pleased that you took it upon yourself to act so well on our behalf in offering a print to the firefighter that you met. I'm especially fond of Frank's print! The prints all feel very familiar after working with them and living with them through the exhibits! Yesterday I brought two of the prints, at the request of the President of the Student Senate of Harper College, to stand as part of the College and Community's noon Memorial Services that were held at the College. The large Student Center was crowded and there were participants standing in all of the balcony and aisle spaces! This service had poetry, music, beautiful words and memories, and the prints had an eloquence of their own! I'm so proud of this portfolio, and of all of the contributions, artistically, monetarily, and by those making such efforts to get the prints to the right places to be seen, appreciated and kept! Thanks to you especially Carol, for marking the way to exhibit with such well thought out footprints. You've made subsequent exhibits more successful through your clear thinking, problem solving, and many other efforts! And my warmest gratefulness to you, John, for beginning this project with your earnest and direct call to action as our emotions held us paralyzed with what we were seeing! This was such a good project for us to be involved in together!
