Subject: [Baren 18888] Baren #18876. Re Vandercooks and other stuff 

Frank,
 I'm sure you've been inundated with Vandercook info by now, but here's my
two-bits worth- The Center For The Book, in San Francisco, offers a class in
printing with a Vandercook, as does San Francisco State U. There are any
number of these presses turning up in Artists studios, and private book
press establishments. My Design partner and self have been working for over
two years on an Artist's Book , which is part of a project known as The
Artist's Millennium Book project launched by the 'Inclusionists'of
Sacramento. Bob Dickover, master printer  of The stalwart Sloth press, has
been our mentor, chief printer and source of endless technical expertise on
using the Vandercook SP-15 press acquired and painstakingly  restored by my
partner, who has christened her press 'The Fractured Press'. If you like I
would be glad to put you in touch with Bob who could answer almost any
questions you have providing he has the correct information for a proper
response. As to the lead question, unless you are exposed to making type the
old fashioned way or are careless with personal hygiene, I don't think you
have to worry about it. My partner has been
 collecting old type face for the last five years ,and keeps it in drawers
that were designed for its storage. Our press weighs considerably more than
700 lbs, and has inking rollers. We print both handset type and woodblocks
and photoengraved plates made from our own artwork.

To the group in general,

Patti Phare-Camp and self went hunting local sources of wood  last Friday
and found a WOODCRAFT store here in Sacramento. Has anyone else in the group
encountered this chain store? They had a limited amount of wood suitable for
Moku Hanga...maybe suitable. I purchased a piece of cherry, (prunis sertina)
which is 1/4x3x24. I'm sure that it is nowhere near the quality that Dave
gets in Japan, but figure I can cut it into three pieces and plan on doing
some small 'sumizuri' prints using that beautiful sumi ink I ordered from
Baren. I also picked up a larger piece of Finnish Birch plywood to
experiment with. Also duly noted was how nicely a sample of American bass
(tilla americana) cut across the grain.
