Some might call it a rainbow roll or blend. I don't know how you'd do that using just watercolor--maybe a gradated wash? Sharri, thanks for the woodcut. It's a knockout. I'll put mine in the mail to you today. I use the same inks you do (really - you're Not the only one!) and apply them with the brayer or a brush, but without going to the edges, whether it's lino or wood. If I plan this ahead of carving, I use a larger block so I can still have as much print area as if I had carved a smaller block and inked it all. Depending on the fade-away you want, you could brayer "casually" in several directions, slightly lifting the brayer as you get to your new non-edge, or use a brush to "feather" the ink outward from where you left off with the brayer. With any of these methods, the block is still intact if you later want to print it to its edges. You may or may not have carved it to the edges, depending on whether the soft-edged look is a forethought or an afterthought. I usually have already carved the block and it's just the inking which is different. I suppose it also wouldn't matter if you were burnishing by hand or using a press, although I always hand print.
