Baren Digest Tuesday, 5 March 2002 Volume 18 : Number 1748 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John and Jan Telfer Date: Mon, 4 Mar 02 21:40:33 -0000 Subject: [Baren 17303] Re: Hazards in the House Dear Jean, >Now that I have been intimidated by high school teachers into neutralizing >my nitric acid that I use for etching zinc plates, I would like to point out >that it has created three gallon bottles of caustic soda, which are a >environmental hazard. Whereas, before, I had one bottle of weak solution of >nitric acid, to which I could add fresh nitric once in awhile, now I have >three big bottles of hazardous waste. If I want to etch again, I will have >to buy more nitric and then create three more large bottles of hazardous >waste You should not feel intimidated by that High School Teacher....You are aware of the potential hazards of acids and I know you have it stored safely and use it safely and have been doing it for years...this teacher has probably no idea about using any form of solution like this and is downright scared and projecting her fears to you. We all have very hazardous materials in our homes in our kitchens, laundary and garden sheds....dish washer caustics, bleach, fly sprays, snail pellets, insect sprays. I grew up on a cattle station and we had drenches, dealdrin, diesals, 1080 and mixomatosis (for the rabbits, Graham), bullets and guns...but we respected their potential and knew, even as young kids how to handle them and how not to handle them and never had an accident of any sort. The same goes with our printmaking studios....we are aware, or should be of what danger these chemicals can inflict so we take care of them and ourselves. So Jean keep your nitric acid safely and use it safely and put a bolt and a self closing high latch on your studio storage door (like we in Australia have to put on our swimming pool gates) and there should be no problem. Best wishes, Jean Jan ------------------------------ From: FurryPressII@aol.com Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 09:49:41 EST Subject: [Baren 17304] Re: Hazards in the House the haz mat people in chicago just said to dilute nitric acid with water as much water as possible at that point it becomes basically harmless. delute it as much as possible. john center ------------------------------ From: Legreenart@cs.com Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 11:00:02 EST Subject: [Baren 17305] Re: Baren Digest V18 #1747 Dear Baren, We will have Australian printmaker Biron Valier exhibiting for our Printmaking month show in April. I wanted to post on Print Australia, but the links swore they were broken today. Also, I petitioned to have April declared Printmaking month in San Antonio, Texas a few years back, and it has helped us get more galleries and museums to feature prints. I would like to see this go national and international. We will send a copy of the petition if any one else would be interested in this. I am going to get my hores out about May 20. Life got really exciting in January. Yours, Le Green Stonemetal Press Email: legreenart@cs.com http://www.stonemetal-press.com ------------------------------ From: "Kenneth G. I've been lurking for a few weeks, reading posts, and learning from the various discussions. My name is Ken Samson, and I am a bookseller by trade, working from home here on the Delmarva Shore. [shameless plug: If there are any books you need, please let me know, and I'll be glad to find a copy for you.] I have joined my first exchange [Music] and am presently at work on it. I'm excited about the design I have chosen, and having fun with the process. I do not have any questions at present, but I am sure I will very soon! I presently have a number of Japanese Prints /Woodblock related books for sale at eBay, and thought I should share them with list members. The prices are very low, and there are no reserves, so there's a good chance you'll be able to pick up a bargain.
