Baren Digest Tuesday, 12 February 2002 Volume 18 : Number 1717 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John and Jan Telfer Date: Tue, 12 Feb 02 14:46:31 -0000 Subject: [Baren 16943] Re: Dry Point Etching Dear Diane, If you are interested in Dry Point Etching and every one else interested in other forms of printmaking join Print Australia which covers all forms of printmaking and the exchange prints arrive with a great abundance of printmaking media and techniques...some I have never even heard of. But the expertise is there and there are always printmakers ready to assist with any problems, queries and developments you wish to know. We have a PA Member called Mikael Kihlman who is a perfectionist dry point etcher from Stockholm. He gets a sheen on his prints that look like he has used a fine graphite pencil, but he doesn't know why they print like that. He also uses chine cole as well for beautiful subtle streetscape images. He has his own book of prints, etc. Technically superb! Many of the Baren members are also with Print Australia and it is organised by Baren Member, Josephine Severn. So join, you are very welcome. Dean we would sure like your expertise as well. But, I have to clarify a quote errantly attributed to me: "Sharri writes speaking about the flora exchange: "...But I felt that on the whole the package was nowhere near as good as the 'junin' set, which is the other baren set I had. So, when I got home, I pulled both sets out and- -" No, no, it wasn't me that said that. I wasn't in the flora exchange so I know nothing about it. I am innocent of this transgression (?)! I'm printing it on Fabriano Magnani Pescia (blue) with a blue-black ink. I haven't done one in years. Drypoint is quite difficult when you're out of practice, yet the concept of the technique is quite simple, considering all the acids and grounds used today with zinc plates. I'll see if I can upload an image of my finished print to the group later this week. What kind of tools are you using for this kind of matrix? Calligraphy had a mass movement beginning in the mid-seventies here in the USA. Now those once very energetic instructors are either getting old or have passed away, and there are fewer and fewer younger calligraphers who are teaching _outside_ of the national and international conferences. And if they are, it is the same little group of calligraphers, over and over, going from one guild to another. Many of the guilds are lacking calligraphers who are actively teaching. Slowly, the education of calligraphy to the public is fading out and I think eventually calligraphy as a mass movement is going to transit from a large flowing river into a trickle of a stream. Perhaps everything is cyclical, but I do see similarities between what is happening in calligraphy and what is happening in printmaking. The masters are not teaching. I am a _huge_ Leonard Baskin lover. A friend of mine here in Tucson has a miniature print he did back in the 70's and I go to her house to see her (of course) [;)] , but also to feast my eyes on that glorious woodcut. I felt the world lost a wonderful visionary when he died. If you go to the SGC conference, perhaps you can give updates to those of us who will be unable to make it this year. Don't we already have something like available on website? Kim >From Princess Rashid: Those comments don't really say anything. What specifically don't you like? What misses? What doesn't work and what does in the piece? How's the composition, use of color, content , etc.? If the piece is a "masterpiece", Why? If we don't intelligently comment and criticize each others work how will we grow as artists and as a community of artists? ===== Kim Medina 539 West Thurber Road, Box 2 Tucson, Arizona 85705-3476 USA (520) 401-6566 http://www.kaschimer.com --------------------- End of Baren Digest V18 #1717 *****************************
