Subject: [Baren 16614] suggestion re large print exchange?` 


Hi all, 

I've been reading over some old posts, and noticed that Juan was 
having trouble sending his large prints to the USA because of dimension.  Is 
it possible for you to roll them up?  that would make a much smaller package. 
On another subject, my mother, who lives in SF, saved me an article out of 
the SF Chronicle which she thought would be interesting to me since it was 
about woodblock printing - and lo and behold, it was about our Marco - 
congrats Marco!! -

Ray,
I asked Dave (who has seen the blocks at the Yoshida studio) about this and
indeed he did use a thin zinc plate screwed to the cherry wood for his key
block. He printed with both oil and waterbased inks, using the water based
inks when he wanted fuzzy lines on the key block. It would be a real trick
to print waterbased ink on zinc, but he must have mastered it. Sort of opens
up lots of possibilities doesn't it? Pretty innovative for the time, it just
shows what a forward thinker he was to embrace this new technology and
incorporate it into the old. I am thinking about trying it with the solar
plates....if it works I will let everyone know. Quite a challenge to mix one
techinque with the other, but that is what printmaking is all about. It will
have to be reversed out for a solar plate, so will also involve the
computer....what a concept. I just love being a printmaker, what an exciting
time to be making prints.

Gee, I hope "tobeornot2be" is someone on Baren. Even in a "hurt" condition, the
Fletcher book would really be a good one to have in one's woodblock library.

The Yoshida book! Wow, Barbara can I borrow yours? Zinc plates? Such heresy....
only kidding. Except for an expert printer - I can't see how the registration
would be done. And just thinking about shrinkage & paper stretching gives me the
heeby-jeebys.  [:-)]

Just a reminder to people who participated in Exchanges #8 & #10, they
will be in a show I've entitled "The Baren Portfolios" from January
7-25. The gallery is:

It is fun going back through all of these, though I'm not fully
enjoying matting 60  prints! Luckily, since I'm the gallery director I
made the executive decision that since this show costs the school
nothing, the galleries are paying for the museum board to mat these
(they will only be matted, not fully framed). That way the ones I had
already planned on framing are halfway there once the show is done.
