Baren Digest Saturday, 8 December 2001 Volume 17 : Number 1643 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Bill H Ritchie Jr" Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2001 06:36:32 -0800 Subject: [Baren 16367] Hands of Mario I read the description of Marco Flavio Marinucci's demonstration in San Francisco by Jean Eger Womack and loved it. When I came to the part: >They even had a video camera >trained on his hands. What a production! My mouth (mouth?) watered. Or, maybe my eyes--crying because few of us, if any, will see that video and the Hands of Mario. Of course there are a hundred reasons--who made the video, where is the master, what are the plans, etc. etc. I've been there. I have hours of videos on printmaking dating back to the '70s, and most of them go nowhere. It's needless to let the process stop there, now that DVD has come down in price to a level where I can afford to sell them online, in the mail, for under $10. They could even be free if one thousand people wanted them--teachers, for example. These are not the movie DVDs--the blanks for those still cost $20 each but these are CD/R discs for about a dollar each. The software is under $300 and runs on a desktop computer under $2000 with some basic graphics software, a "burner". And now the best part is, I learned at a workshop last week, the new ones let a PC (and I guess Mac) user "jump" from the disc to any URL on-line! Imagine watching Mario's hands, and a place on the screen that says "Go to Mario's Web site" or "Go to woodcut.org" etc. These basics should be taught in schools. It's my dream to start a school that teaches these basics at the same time people learn the basics of the hands-on arts, crafts and design. Anyone knowing a learning community where I can share more, let me know please. Crying in Seattle. Bill H. This is my first post, and I've got a request. I'm having a hard time finding ink, other than Speedball. I don't know any other printers in my area, to ask where they order from or what works for them... can anyone please give me reference to manufactures or distributers that I might be able to order from. I used to do a lot of oil painting in the past, and I am specificly looking for inks that have some of the same qualitites and names... like prussian blue, or alizeran crimson etc. I am not neccisarly looking for oil based inks, I use bolth water and oil based depending on my mood. Thnaks, you can send me feedback directly and I'll summerize for the list. Hi guys, I've been checking out your websites, and am in awe of the wonderful artwork there. It seems that many of you are successful at selling your prints from your websites... I'm wondering how the market really is for prints now? I'm also involved with several painter's groups, and some of them are having a really hard time right now because of clients who won't pay, or jobs that are falling through. I realize that for the most part, prints seems more "friendly" to buyers (that's what I've been told anyway), and wonder what success ya'll have had selling from your websites? Or do most of you sell from shows or galleries? I'm in a position now that I can't do many shows (not that there are many good shows around here), but do want to vamp up the website and have a section strictly for the relief prints. Any comments would be appreciated.... The reason I decided to try wood block was because i carved a figurative piece in lino and looked at it and thought how wonderful that piece would have been done in wood with the grain showing. Some day when i get time i will try just that. Maybe next summer, I am finding out there is a lot to know about this wood carving stuff. You could find it by on one of the search engines under that name. Ink is different than paint and the names are different, sort of. There are several companies that sell ink my mail, Graphic chemical in Chicago, http://www.graphicchemical.com and Daniel Smith in Seattle, http://www.danielsmith.com Both companies have waterbased ink for relief printing, Graphic chemical specializes in printmaking supplies. The other choice is Akua Kolor, http://www.waterbasedinks.com Also for hanga printmaking, there are supplies on the baren mall, http://www.barenforum.org/mall or McClain's printmaking supplies at http://www.imcclains.com So there you go, lots of choices. Let us know if you need more help. Some other suppliers may be brought up by other list members. Explorer can be viewed, I hope. I had never intended to take up valuable print time with this "work" but the builder I contracted seemed to only know the default key for everything. One section also has two unfinished pages - being created in my weekly computer design time - I'll add them when I can. Just thought I'd get this on the road before 2002... Anyway drop in, if you can: http://www.i-chubu.ne.jp/~stones/ (Sorry a bit long, economics/Japanese servers... that ~ is a tilde) Re Bobbi Chukran's question on print sales: I'm not sure if this project will promote sales (there's a price list and have already sold) but, for me, one of the more positive results has been the chance for friends and family - scattered all over - to see what I've been doing in Japan over the past 30 years. The commercial side may come... or may not. We will show only prints done on woodblocks and mostly those done in the hanga method. This will be in conjunction with a Japanese festival the Portland Art Museum is having from June to September. The NW Print Council will show the Baren works in July of 2002 in the John and Betty Gray Gallery at 922 SW Main St, Portland OR 97205. So there we go, another little step forward for woodblock. We will have some hanga demonstrations as well as an exhibit of tools, brushes, barens and so forth. Not as big as skokie, but it will be a sincere little exhibit! John, can I use your baren card for the announcement? I sure liked the one Julio used for the Skokie exhibit, it certainly represents us well!
